View Full Version : zdp stretch !!
I had reason to drive by the Spydie store yesterday and had some time before my appointment so I dropped in. Just an unplanned thing, right????
I asked to see a stretch, and low and behold, they'd just put out the first of the zdp189/CF new ones. Had to get one. Sal did a bang up job with these, too nice. I took the clip off, but here it is......

That is one nice looking knife! :D
Any chance of getting some closeups of the blade and handle?
Since it is pretty much the same on each side, I guess this'll do.

I went w/ clip off cause it's going to edc in my back pocket. Other side says SEKI-CITY Japan
It's hard to see the stencil but it's there. SPYDERCO ZDP-189.

Cool, so there's at least an outside chance the CC#d ones will reach their owners before Christmas. Congratulations on being the first to get (or at least the first to brag about getting :D ) one.
I went w/ clip off cause it's going to edc in my back pocket. Been carrying a Stretch that way since they first came out.
Handle material and steel marking seems to be the only visible differences between the old and the new.

How much does it weigh? Is it laminated ZDP-189 or solid ZDP-189?
I've got no way to weigh it, but it seems pretty much the same as a regular stretch. I don't think you could tell the difference.
Just better steel.
Also, if you look at a Caly, you can see the laminations very clearly. This is solid zdp which is why it's made is Seki. According the the sales girl at the factory store, they have a hard time importing the zdp so they make it there.
It's soooooo smooth and the lock is totally spyderco solid. It's first task was to section an apple for a snack. Performed that flawlessly. :D

It is peel-ply CF, it looks a lot like G10. Congrats on the new Stretch. You're not the first, but possibly the first 'civilian' to own one with bragging rights! :D

Looks alot like the CF peel-ply from the Millie Sprint last year. Love my Millie with the peel-ply. It does remind a little of G-10, but the "new" feel of G-10 out of the box goes away with use and wear. The peel-ply stays that way. Look forward to getting that.............

Hi Rnr,
Congrats. I've been carrying one for some time now, so yours is the 2nd.
We made our first "Hunter" model about 1983. The current version is some 5 generations refined.
Hi Paul,
The collector pieces are being numbered now.
There are some minor differences. The peel-ply carbon fiber combined with the sekeltonized liners make for a lighter piece. (128.1gms - 110.3gms)
We went to the E4/D4 clip so it was necessary to make the butt a tad longer.
The ZDP is very nice. I've been thinning the edge on mine....by hand. Slow tedious work.

rnr,
you are one lucky guy! The word from Golden is that the the SFO got those by mistake. The good news (for Deacon and other CC members) is that the first batch of 200 are being sent out to be engraved.
For the rest of us, they should be getting in another shipment late November/early December. These will be used to fulfill back orders from dealers and distributors (glad I've got mine in :D).

Congrats with this score. You must be a happy man. I prefer this one over the original ss with kraton inlayed one. I was not to fond about the looks of the handle of the first generation. Looks like a great edc. I also like the blade size 89 mm not to big and not to small.

Awesome for you! GREAT looking knife. Perfect length and the beautiful semi-skinner blade is, to me the perfect all around blade shape.

How about VG-10 blade, stainless frame, and Kraton grip inserts?
Sal,
If you want, I'll gladly thin out the bevel on your Stretch II. I use a jig with a 250 grit diamond stone to set the bevel and some polishing stones to remove the diamond's scratches. And I'm not just offering so that I can snort the loose ZDP-189 filings, either (man that steel is good!).

Thanx for the offer Thom, but I'd like to see what it takes to bring this one down. I've thinned out a Delica ZDP. How thin do you make them? (yes, that steel IS good). Besides, I like to snort the steel filings myself. :p
I'm thinking to make a "Mule Team" in ZDP. With steel orders taking so long, If I begin now, I might have it ready by '09.

Got my Blue ZDP D4 down to about 0.006" at shoulder and the ZDP Caly3 down to 0.008"-0.01" at shoulder. The Delica has a new, flat sabre ground that extends 1/3 of the way into the Spyderhole and the Caly3 has a large, pretty bevel. Lent the rebevelled D4 to Thomas Welk in attempts to warp his mind, but he's less impressionable than me.

Would Cowry-X work or is it too expensive? It appears to have been Hitachi's muse for ZDP-189.
That's really thin. I imagine slicing performance is awsome.
We can do a Cowry run as well. The lead times are long so planning ahead on these exotics is necessary.
Thomas is bright and knows his knives. (His mind is already warped.:p ) He's impressionable. He's just less vocal than you. ;)

0.006" is much too thick to be a razor blade. No problems with warpage, but chipping becomes easier.
The biggest problem is not having a Stretch II. Peel-ply carbon fiber, ZDP-189 Stretch blade, and a furniture-friendly D4/E4 clip - :( The knifelust is excruciating.

Sal, A zdp mule would probably appeal to a bunch of darksider types like Thom , gunmike etc. Would you run the mule hotter than the folders? It would be nice to see what this stuff can do when pushed hard.
How difficult a time did you have with the 52100? Was it Heat treat related troubles? Doing large batches is quite a bit different than forging a blade at a time. I'd think you'd have warpage, and various troubles like that as a minimum. I hear getting everything perfect can be difficult with 52100. It's one that can perform when done properly though.
Thom, My lust factor has been wrestleing with my common sense inhibitors on the Stretch 2 also. I've been wondering if I really need food, and to pay the water bill. It's amazing what kind of rationalizations the human mind is capable of. The Ironic thing is that if I wait I will get it without trouble anyway. The part that doesn't like to wait sure can be persistant though. Joe
Hi Joe,
forging 52100 one blade at a time is a different mfg process.
In production we experienced slight traces of "rust" and had to change some of our processes. Quench is critical and the blade must be perfectly straight to avoid warping.
Taken to a very fine stone (ultra-fine ceramic), it is very sharp.

Thanks Sal. Have you ever thought about writing a book? This is another example why. Just as you learn enough to perfect the steels process for large batches you will move on to the next challenge with the next steel. Let's hope for posterity's sake you're not like Homer Simpson and every time you learn something new, you must forget something old to make room.:(
BTW, I did check. The catholic church doesn't yet have a saint for alloyed steels and the always near broke Steel junkies of the world that you work with daily. Say the word and I'll submit paperwork to begin the beatification process. I don't think you even have to be catholic:) Just don't point fingers in public, and have too many visible tatoos. Joe

It's the main reason the US broke away from Britain. Back then, Sheffield cutlers were very against such things and we were a nation of steel junkies. Still are!

Golden CO is close enough to Boulder, CO thus, we can snort anything we want... As long as it has a rockwell hardness of 58-64.:D
Hi LJK,
Thanx for the kind words.
I thin out blades by hand.
On the Stretch, I've been maintaining a 30 degree edge on the Sharpmaker and thinning the shoulder little by little. I've been using ceramic and diamond stones. The diamond Duckfoot isn't bad for thinning (on the flat surface).
The steel is very abrsive resistance so it's a slow process by hand. I've got a Norton "Triple-flip". Thought to play with it today on the stretch.
Thom, is that .006 at the shoulder after the edge bevel?
Steel junkies you say? The '08 Spyderco T-shirt that Joyce came up with has a picture of a steel matrix before and after heat treat.

salHad a hunch it would be lighter, though it's still about 10 gms. heavier than my STR customized original Stretch. Am sure the clip accounts for some of that.
Speaking of clips, can't say I understand the logic of the change. One of the major virtues of the Stretch was its superb blade/handle ratio. Since the wherewithal to fabricate its clip already existed, why sacrifice that? Or is this just another case of me worshiping different gods than the majority of buyers?

It is on the ZDP D4. Reground the primary with a 120 grit DMT and fought to remove the huge gouges.
Left Hand Path
11-04-2007, 08:28 AM
Regarding clips - I like the blade-handle ratio a lot on the original Stretch, but I will gladly put up with a longer handle in order to have the superb D4/E4 clip. The original clip is fine, but the D4 clip is the best ever, except for wire low-rider.
I have a re-ground D4 ZDP from Krein with .010" at the shoulder behind the edge bevel. Time will tell if I choose to do more regrinds, but ZDP seems ideal for it. Sal, do you know the approximate thickness of the edge on the upcoming ZDP Stretch? I realize it will vary b/c of hand finishing/sharpening, but do you have a target or average thickness?

Sal, even leaving out the things your family and the police don't need to know about there is still a good book to be written. Ultimately I think the problem will be putting down the knives and getting to work writing.
There again, if it would delay the development cycle and the mule teal I'm all for bagging it up and starting it some other time. Time is valuable!:D
Still, I think "Saint Sal of the mountains" ," Patron saint of alloyed steels and steel junkies" has a ring to it. Give that some thought ok? I believe Sainthoods come with reserved parking spots nowadays. Joe

Hi Paul,
We're trying to standardize clips more. We have too many dedicated clips. the new E4/D4 clip works very well and it was very close to the Stretch clip so I opted to make the change and reduce our clip inventory requirement by one.

Kind of, but not everybody gets that. Too many still chase the dollar and never realize the importance of the people in their lives. That's besides the point though. I still think the guy that brings us all the good things that us knife knuts and steel junkies enjoy should be recognized for their good work. Baron Von Sal, or Count Sal just didn't have the right ring to it though. I doubt we could talk you into running for president either. You're too honest for that anyway.:)
I guess we'll have to stick with "Sal" for now. Unless I could talk you into changing it to a symbol like the formerly known as prince guy. A 10 foot tall palladium plated spyder. Yeah....that's the ticket........ Joe
Sorry about resurecting an old thread, but I've been hunting elk/deer all last week.
This thread has good reading. :)
I got a chance to use the knife on the hunt last week. One of the guys I hunt w/ got a nice 5x5 bull. He was bragging earlier about his new $9.95 knife and that he was really happy with it. Well, by the time I got to him after he shot it, he and another guy had gutted the bull. But not before it was dull. The last part of the gutting was more of a ripping and he couldn't cape the head.
So when I got there, he asked me to cape it for him. Well, I used my new stretch and both of these guys were super impressed at how easy the skin came off and then when I was still able to cut thru the neck meat w/ no problem, they thought it was really nice.
So yeah, my stretch has been 'blooded' and cleaned up w/ no problems and I got to teach a couple guys why I spend $100 & $200 or more for many of my knives.
Oh yeah. And Sal said mine is the second one!!! Too cool. :-)
