Just saw the movie Ocean's Eleven and am 90% sure there are a couple Spyderco's in there. Anyone else see this? I was stuffing my face with popcorn and missed what model it was.

Hmm. Saw it two days ago. Didn't see a single knife, let alone a spyderco.

Now I'm sure the placement wouldn't have been as obvious as Training Day with a full screen shot of a serrated Police. But I'm pretty sure I would have noticed one.

<shrug> I'd be interested to know if I missed one in someone's pocket. Let us all know Kahz.

The scene:

Clooney and Damon are preparing to rappel down an elevator shaft. Clooney opens a stainless steel briefcase full of gear. I think there are 2 Spydercos in the case (side by side) and once he and Damon descend the shaft, the rappel lines leave them 6-8 feet off the floor so they cut the lines (with a Spyderco???), dropping the rest of the way.
Good movie by the way!

Oh yeah. Now I remember, they did cut those repelling lines... unfortunatily the shot didn't really give a decent lookie a the knives. Maybe in the DVD we'll be able to pause there and see what they use. In any case, great movie, everyone go see it.

Joyce,

I confess *looks embarrased*... I have not seen "Ocean's 11" yet... but I did manage to go to the first "Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" show at 12 a.m. until 3 a.m. last night. I am such a geek! LOL!

Being a die hard Tolkienite for more than half of my life (over 15 years, yikes! time flies!), I thought it was an excellent movie. Lots of blades. Oh, and Orcs... *shivers*

I will go see "Ocean's 11" this coming weekend and I will keep my eyes peeled. I just had to confess that the lure of Sauron won me over...

Kahz- Good to see another LOTR fan on here! Have you translated your signature into Elvish yet?

I'm going to see LOTR this weekend, and I'll probably squeeze Ocean's 11 in there too.

Keepin' it real...real sharp, that is.

Kahz
12-19-2001, 05:56 PM
Sword & Shield,

No, I haven't translated it into Elvish yet, but I did write crypto-letters back and forth with a friend in Runic symbols when I was in high school.

And I also play the card game, Middle Earth, but it's hard to find others to play with. My husband and I play quite frequently. I always call Council first , Bwahahaha!!!! Ok, fine, he beat me once, but he managed to kill Cirdan with a dragon while traveling somewhere up north, yikes!

I hope you like the movie, there are a few "incidents" that are not in the book, but other than that, I think it was a great adaptation. I have reconciled myself with these differences. I own the older movie and the cartoons, and well, this new one is by far better. This was a huge tangent, but I am passionate about Tolkien and I love to meet other fans. Sorry folks...

Back to knives and Ocean's Eleven.

Ok everyone,

Here are the Spydies in Ocean's 11. It's a little pixelized but you can just make out their shape. They seem to have G-10 handles and the tell-tale hump for the Spyderhole.

Can anyone guess at what they are?

The one on the left looks like a Wegner to me. Will a prize be given to the winning guess? (Hint to Joyce)

Make that a Wegner without the clip attached. Btw, Lsaulog, amazing how you were able to produce that photo. Our FBI or CIA could use people with your skills.

Hoosierdaddy

Now, I'd tell you how I got the image, but, you know, then I'd have to...well, never mind.

Hmm, a job with the CIA/FBI/NSA would have been perfect. Oh well, now that I'm married with children (no pun intended), I relegate my career to lurking around in computers & laptops. Hey, wait a minute, isn't that what those spooks do anyway? *LOL*

I saw the movie definitely a wegner.

Lsaulog
12-20-2001, 03:48 PM
Hmmm, it could also be a Pro-Grip. In the picture, I can't really tell if the handles are really G-10 or FRN. It might be a Wegner but the "hump" looks more pronounced, more like a Pro-Grip.

Ok, time to do some digging. Anyone know someone from the studios in Hollywood?

Wegner seems like it to me (Yoda-like talk). I can't make out the other one, though...

Joyce, well, critics will be critics will be critics... I have heard many comments they make about the movie being inconclusive. I think they need to read the books again to understand just why it is so. Also, be prepared, it's long (3 hrs.), but _for me_, it was too short. Go watch it, enjoy it, and if you don't like it, oh well, at least you will have your own opinion to count on and no one will tell you about it, right?

After watching it, this guy has very good criticism for the film. Harsh, but I think he has several good points. Being a die hard fan, I accept them, but I still enjoyed the movie.

Its the first of three movies they made on this trilogy. The three are completed, they will release them one per year. I fell asleep last night watching the Rankin/Bass production of "The Hobbit" with John Huston's doing the voice for Gandalf. And have been listening to a BBC production of LOTR on CD on my Rio Volt today. Will go see the new movie next week.

Hi Kahz,

I also saw it on the opening day, though at 10am not 12:01am.

I agree that it was too short -- by 20 or 30 minutes. There wasn't enough time spent on the meeting of Strider and the hobbits, and not enough time on the events in Lothlorien either. Hopefully there will be a "Directors cut" on DVD that's 3.5 hours long.

Carlos,

I couldn't agree with you more. I am just a bit annoyed about the "Arwen incident", especially since I wanted to see Glorfindel on his white horse (yes, a crush... ), but I can live with it. Many Tolkienites can live without Bombadil, but I still would have liked to see that AND the Barrow Downs.

Hmmm... this is somehow related to Spydies, right?

Should you decide to become a collector after receiving Clay's offering....I found in a catalog of medieval weaponry a candy dish from Spain made of something lost by a VERY large bull.

Jeff,

No sign of the Centofante and Gordon hasn't given me any details of the shipping. I'm assuming it's on its way as my CC has been debited. The gunmetal blue Chinese Folder arrived a couple of days ago and it was ordered at the same time.

Chinook, I would say the size would be "Medium Marbles". There is a natural taper to the neck and a draw string closure. It has been stamped "Lucky Pouch" but one would have to ask lucky for whom, certainly not the poor 'roo .

Kahz, I read LOTR about 25years ago and it is still my favourite book. Must be time for a reread. Can't wait for the movie.

Please keep this in mind.

LOTR is one of my favourites as well, along with _Foucault's Pendulum_ by Umberto Eco and several others, but these two I can read and re-read w/o stopping or getting bored. The only other book I have read more than these two is one called _Plutonia_ by a Russian author, Vladimir Obruchev. Good to know you are also a Tolkien fan, I respect you EVEN more now.

Hey Kahz,

The omission of Glorfindel was very sad -- I was looking for him too. He is one of the great characters of the mythos. I guess in film they need to minimize characters, and since Arwen is an important part of Strider -- and kind of a nothing character in the book -- they gave Glorfindel's role and power to her. It is unfortunate that they blurred some of the distinction between the half-elves like Elrond and Arwen, the regular Elves like Legolas, and the Elf-Lords like Glorfindel and Galadriel.

Alas, Gondolin has fallen!

Kahz

Yes, well, eventually Aragorn will be King, so I guess they want to make the future Queen important.

Kahz,

Funny you should mention Foucault's Pendulum. I loved "The Name of the Rose", picked it up after seeing the film on TV. Wonderful film BTW, probably the best thing Sean Connery's ever done. I've started Foucault's Pendulum on several occasions, usually over the Christmas break but my vacation always ends too soon and life has a habit of getting in the way of me finishing it. I'm glad you reminded me about it though, I'll have another go at finishing it these holidays. BTW I wonder what steel was used in the Knights Templars' swords (obligitory knife content ).

Oh, read the whole book as soon as you get a chance, it's excellent! Well, I also have a weakness for "secret societies" , especially the Templars. _The Name of the Rose_ is an excellent book as well, although I like the Pendulum a lot more. I agree, the movie was pretty good. And Sean Connery is the best James Bond there has ever been. Like good wine, he gets better with age.

Product update!

We here at Spyderco gathered around my computer terminal last Friday and all had a 'group look' at the posted image. After further review (and Sal with a jeweler's loupe) we've determined that the knives in the Ocean's Eleven image are actually a C26 Snap-It and a C30 Remote Release (with sheepfoot blade).

Well since you guys are talking about movies in that other thread I wanted to pass this along... Chinook gave a website to find movies to buy... The original Oceans Eleven of which I only saw half of was really good! It was made in 1960 and starred "The Rat Pack" ie Fank Sinatra, Sammy Davis jr, Peter Lawford, Dean Martin, also Angie Dickinson (the part of Dan Oceans Ex) and Ceaser Romero. You can buy this movie for 9 bux... I give it 2 thumbs up
BTW... I liked the sequel (currant Oceans 11) except the ending could have been better!!
