View Full Version : Caly 3 vs. fire hose

The other day at work I had to remove a fire hose and the connector of the fire hose where it threads on became stripped or cross threaded. The only way it could be removed was with a large pipe wrench, which I didn't have on me at the time (they are not pocket friendly). But what I did have on me was my Caly 3 serrated. I think you can figure out what happened next.
Score:
Caly3 - 1
fire hose - 0.
I just wanted to share my elation and satisfaction with this awesome knife experience.

Nice work with the Caly-How is the edge after the hose? I know that with our hose-esp 5 inch the VG-10 takes a beating, but it comes right back on the sharpmaker, however.
We had some condemed hose that we use in our burn building when our company goes training (rubber inside gets a lot of smoke going-kills visibility), and my little Rescue cut 200 ft of hose into 3 foot pieces. It did a great job, but needed to be sharpened a few times in between sessions. BTW that hose lasted around 5 burns when combined with the wood on the fire.

This a good Idea I will have to burn some of our blown hose next time we have a burn house training. I have found the best thing for cutting double jacketed rubber lined fire hose is a fully serrated Spyderco.

Please tell me that all you did was cut through the fire hose, and that you didn't use your Caly3 for prying off a connector cap. :o

Serrations = makes mince mate out of a fire hose!!:p

I'm not so sure it does that--it's still a pretty tough cut with a sharp Spyderedge.

I think that a plain edge would have struggled a bit more

It's always cool to see what fireman use as tools on the job. I've got a place in my heart for fireman.
I always wanted to be one but my wife and I met and she said that she would be scared for me everyday so I never became one. I didn't want to put her through that.
So anyway, God bless you guys that do your thing always! Some days I still wish I could have become a fireman. ;)

I have heard that firehose is tough stuff, so thats cool that the caly could handle it.
However, I think some giant scissors would have been ideal.

There are very few cutable materials that are as tough as fire hose. Especially when salty. Crossing the equator ceremony(Wog day) requires a lot of old fire hose cutting:D

i doubt scissors would have done the job or at least not easily. even those trauma ones they give us in the boo boo wagon would have taken awhile and been a major pita.

Listen to a Fireman.
I'm quiet impressed that it is possible with a Caly .
Did you had to reprofile it after the job ?
did you touch it up between the cuttings on ceramic rods or did you use dmt diafolds diamond stones fe between the cuttings??
Just curious: Maarten
