I have noticed small stainspots developing on my combo edge Delica4 VG10 blade, but both my spyderedge and plainedge D4's have no stainspotting thusfar,at all.
i have had my plain and spyderedge D4's way longer than my combo edge D4,but none of the 2 has developed any spotting at all.
I dont know if you could call the spotting rust, its just small stains. Rust i have seen developing on other knifeblades i have, but defenitely brown spots,as actual rust like i know it.
I still love VG10,also because of its high corrosion resistancy for a high carbon steel. So as for VG10 as a high carbon S steel,i can understand if some stainspotting develops.

I bet you could buff it out with to some metal polish. And that would take care of the problem. Do you live near alot of salt water?

By the way, you picked a good day to be born. :) (thats my birthday to)

VG-10 certainly is a high carbon stainless steel. But I've never had any rust issues with it. A buddy of mine got battery acid on his Endura and it was the strangest thing, there seemed to be a "chrome" plating that melted where the battery acid touched it, revealing underneath a dull gray steel. I don't know if the blades are plated with something or what but battery acid sure does take the first couple of thousanths of the "sheen" off. Performance wasn't affected of course. He still carries the knife.

I've always been interested to know what this mystery plating is and why it's necessary given the supposed corrosion resistance of the steel. Anybody else experience this?

It's rare to hear a VG-10 rusts, I mean I use mine to cut lemons and limes all the time and sometimes I forgot to wash (shhhh :p ) the blade for few hours and still haven't experience rust at all, same go for S30V

I indeed do live and work near the ocean.
So my car takes a beating aswell.
VG10 is still a great steel and gives rust the finger(xcuse my french)in most cases.
I usually get very dissapointed in my other brand knives that vouch for high corrosion resistance and develops rust from my just touching the blade and not wiping it clean.
Dude, a great day to be born indeed.
Our b/day is round the corner, maybe Spyders are hiding somewhere for our taking.

the stains that developed doesn't look like actual rust on the VG10.
Looks like tarnishing from water.Wiped the blade with a cloth and the lil spots still remain.
I must insist that i haven't noticed actual brown rustspotting on any VG10 blade ever.

That happened to my Delica, and had the same symptoms, try cutting some cardboard, when I did, it came right off!

my VG-10 blades have picked up stains from handling them and not cleaning the blade prior to storage..... a little metal polish like Flitz/MetalGlo and some elbow grease will remove the stains easily.... :)

Just like we fall ill with the flu etc.,so does our favorite edc.,with corrosion/rust, or it could just be the effects of globalwarming on bladesteels like VG10 to stain.,ps.sorry just kidding-MW.

I had something similar happen to my Lava. Here is the post.

Try some Flitz polish like I did. I might do the trick, it helped me.

Good luck.
