View Full Version : Hawkbill uses?
Probably been discussed numerous times already, but I'm getting quite interested in getting a hawkbill lately - probably a Tasman Salt. Could anyone please tell me what all you use them for, and any advantages you see to the blade shape as opposed to, say, my Rescue 79mm or something with a normal
outward-curved blade? Thanks in advance for any help.

I haven't read others' thoughts on this, but I think the hawkbill shape is primarily useful for cutting things like rope and foliage. I've also seen hawkbill shape blades being used for woodworking, where they are used for scoring lines into wood, as an alternative to using a pencil, etc.
Other blade shapes might be able to handle these tasks just fine, but the hawkbill would show its advantage taking on such tasks in a repetitive manner. The curve of the blade does some of the cutting work for you, and the shape would be especially suited for scoring/marking wood on a bench, putting less stress on the wrist compared with other blade shapes.
Of course, the hawkbill would also be very effective for self-defense, a slashing motion with a serrated hawkbill would be formidable.

I use hawkbills for whatever I use any straighter-edged knife for, except the hawkbill cuts in a different manner known as a "pull-cut". I have found no limitations to this blade design...seems like Mother Nature knew what she was doing when she made talons and beaks in the shapes that she did! ;) :D
I think you'll love the Tasman.

I've just jumped into the whole hawkbill thing, mostly because of the wicked looks they have. Yes, I am shallow like that and really go in for looks.
I am very intrigued by these blades and am anxiously awaiting my Tasman Salt PE and my lucky find of a new Merlin. As a newbie to hawkbills, I will post up my impressions after having a chance to actually use them a bit and not just drool over their devastatingly good looks. :D
