View Full Version : A weird notion...

I know that I have pestered Sal overmuch of late, so after this I'll give it a long rest. Anyway, a few factors were mulling in my head, naturally resulting in a new SKU idea.

The factors:

1. Dozier folder collaboration impossible.

2. Spyderco wants to limit new collaborations and focus on inhouse designs.

This naturally gave me the idea that Spyderco could create an inhouse-designed folding hunter.

It does have the C48 Wegner, but that is a "semi-skinner" blade, and of course not an inhouse (Sal) design. C48 is still my favourite folding knife, but man does not live on one knife alone :D . Pro Grips are cute but small, and where's the G10?

Imagine instead a classic drop-point skinner blade with a wide fully flat-ground blade -no swedge or other silliness. A Military-size Spyder-hole.

To put it in a slightly different size class than the C48, give it a 10cm CPM-440V blade (~3.9 inch), simple and straight 12.5cm (~5 inch) G10 handles with nested liner-lock (a la Military) or compression lock.

Reversible tip-up/down clip. No design compromises for looks -- all function.

The name? Plain and straight forward: Spyderco Forester.

Well now that it's out of my head, I can go to bed. Goodnight to all, and to all a good night.

Nice idea Carlos. I particularly like the suggestion that it should have a flat ground blade. These days I find the only knives I am carrying are my Calypso Jrs, Centofante Jr and Military. Can't see myself buying another hollow ground blade, just as well the Chinese Folder has a flat grind .

Thanks Clay,

I was thinking about it, and I realized that this concept would be ideal utility folder for everyday use. I also realized that it might make a good commission for a custom bladesmith. It is unreasonable to expect Spyderco or any other manufacturer to taylor make an SKU for each of our individual preferences.

It would be expensive, and I'd have to settle for a thumb-stud instead of a Spydie-hole , but it would be a better course of action than pestering our pal Sal.

You know, designing a knife is harder than is appears. I spent some time trying to draw up my concept, and found that the width required for the drop-pont skinner blade 4" long, resulted in a massive knife overall.

It seems that to get a properly proportioned wide drop-point skinner blade into a useable folder, one has to limit oneself to a 3.5 or 3.3" blade length and a wide 4.5" handle.

Henceforth I think I'll leave knife design to the experts. But if you can imagine the drop-point Moran's blade on a G10-handled folding knife, then you get the picture.

Hi Carlos. It's not pestering, that's why I'm here. Interesting thought. Drawing the concept does get tough though. There are a number of dimensions that we've learned work with the Spyderhole and many do not. Ergos are difficult to fit in.

We've thought about it, just have quite a few already on the line. there are also a few niche markets that we'd like to dabble in with a purpose build piece..

Thanks Sal, I can really begin to appreciate how difficult it be to take a knife from concept to production. No wonder it is often a matter of years.

Keep up the good work!
