I gave my brother a Delica3 spyderedge 2years ago.
He has used the knife to the point wear its tip has broken off, from normal use though and the blade looks pretty much well used.
I was thinking of giving him one of my Delica4's,because i have 3 in all the edges,VG10 steel.
He can't afford one right now and i know he likes his beater D3,alot.
If any of you were in this situation, and you were thinking of leaving a small void in your collection by giving someone a Spydie, would you do so,for a family member?
Can i go ahead and depart with one,so long?

sure. good favors always come full circle. speaking of giving knives to one's brother:
i bought my younger brother (16y/o) an etched cricket for Xmas this year, and I made him a lanyard that matches the one on my etched spin. he's always wanted a knife and i'm sure he is going to be jumping for joy with his new fangled Spydie. it sure is rough being 3000 miles from my family
personally, i am anxiously anticipating my first Delica. A D4 CE in VG-10 and Foliage Green. just stinks waiting for Paypal to clear!

I'm wearing my combo edge at work today,as we speak, but mine is black FRN.
i'm waiting to go pickup my D4 Wave 2days from now, anticipation is eating at me too.
The combo edge D4 in foilage green has a fresher look to me.
the D4W would be my 1st different color FRN handle.

Had a PE C54 Calypso, gave it to a buddy. While later, got the urge for one, bought another. While later gave that one to another buddy. While later, got the urge again and bought another. That one may be around for a while, but my point is these things are replaceable if one decides they need replacing.

I can't count the number of knives I've given to family. If he used the last one to the point you describe he could probably use another, along with a refurbishing of his old one, while he's breaking in his new one. Brothers are worth a lot more than the cost of a knife anyways. Teach him how not to break tips on his knives though.
I had an uncle, 4 years older that grew up like a big brother. He died too young. After he passed, his widow gave me his treasure box. In it, along with all the treasures from his life were every knife I ever gave him, used and oiled waiting for their owner to return. I'd rather not have gotten them back that way, but it showed me how much the knives had meant to him coming from me. Joe

I cant agree with you more Mastiff, there isn't actually i doubt in my mind, not to give my brother the knife.
It gives me great pleasure, when i can give someone a part of something,i hold close to my heart, like my knifecollection.
The appreciation is the greatest reward.
Giving a loved one something, has alot deeper meaning than the gift given.

I am sure your brother will appreciate even more a brand new Delica 4 than the older D3 he's so fond of. And you'll see that the joy you bring to him will reflect upon yourself even brighter :)

I always feel better about receiving a gift from someone special if it's something that they have used and has become part of them and their routine. I give gifts in the same way.
My wife and I are giving our best mates (man and his wife) knives for Christmas. I have carried and very lightly used each of them just so they have a connection with us. Now, when the knives travel with Michael and Jo on their adventures, part of us will go with them.
Give your brother one of your D4s... and you can start breaking in another one.
I gave my oldest son my FG SE D4. That small "hole" you put in your collection should be easily filled by the sense of satisfaction you receive from giving your brother a great new piece of cutlery. :)

...dito.
...and on top of that I would send it in to Golden to have it resharpened. I'm sure there is still a lot of life in this Delica. The Repair Department does wonders when it comes to well-used blades. Why retire it when it still can do so much for you? :)

To me it always feels good to give a knife away to someone you have a connection with or family.
My best friend doesn't like knives at all and thinks my D3/SE is huge. Well the other day I gave him a SS Cricket/SE. He liked that one and if I'm right he carries it very regularly:cool:
And man was I happy with the Caly III/SE I got from Paul(Deacon) and the D2 Military/SE from Sal. I won't ever part with these knives for no amount of money.
So I would say give him the Delica;)
