View Full Version : Another Q question.
I have several Q variants . Most have a "flat" profile handle.
One has a "3d " type handle but no lock stop pin.
Any info on this variation?
any help appreciated!
thanks,SSB:spyder:

That's the "first generation" Q. The handle was changed to flat for easier production, and the stop pin added to retain the combination lockbar/ lockspring. I believe the two changes were simultaneous, as I've never seen a Q with either a 3D handle and a stop pin, or a flat handle and no stop pin. But, as with many things Spyderco (and otherwise), making assumptions based on limited samples is guesswork at best. Based on the fact that both the 1998 SHOT show and 1998 Kona Q have flat handles, while the 1996 NYCKS Q has the 3D style, I think it's fairly safe to say the change occurred somewhere between those dates.

SSB,
Which variants do you have? I'm always looking to see if some unseen ones surface. I'm also in the process of acquiring a Q that was made for a Canadian Organization :D One I have been looking for, for a long time.

Well Chris, if that's the one i think it is, you are very, very lucky!
I have only the standard "bug " ones.
3 se (1 first generation ,2 second generation) & a second gen. pe.
All with black handles. Sorry no company variations.
Would the Canadian one be MEC(Mountain Equipment Co-Op)?

I would be guessing DU too, after a little research actually.
Then again, it seems you might have inside info, Paul... :D

The DU is correct. I received it Wednesday and have been wearing it since. Now I have one of my own :D

Hey Chris,
Great snag! That one is still on the top of my Q Want List! Very difficult to find out much about it let alone locate one! Do you know how many were made of each handle color?

Hi Dan,
on this one I have no idea how many. I have not seen many over the years either. I expect the number to be low, especially since DU is a non-profit organization. Interesting thing I have noticed. The Black handled ones seem to be from Canadians where the few green ones I have seen were in the hands of American's.
Good Luck in your search for one. I'm going to see if I can flush out another Q from my list before the new year. I need to get a new group picture too

Congrats on your score, Chris!
I am glad to see there's variations still popping up that you don't have.
