Who here EDC's a really old spyderco?

i was just wondering. i have seen threads (more on BF) where a :spyder: has failed/broken (more from abuse than use IMO) and then there are the threads of requests for sprint runs of discontinued knives with newer steels. it made me wonder 1) how many of us have actually USED up a spyderco? (breaking the knife due to ignorance doesnt count) and 2) on the old knives and their respective old steels, how bad were the steels compared to zdp 189, vg10 and s30v to name a few. my oldest spydie has IIRC ats55, been sent to spyderco 3x (once for a 1/8" broken tip, my fault) and still works fine. the last question and title of this thread who here carries an old discontinued spydie and how is it holding up? how does it compare to the newer :spyder:s?

Not discontinued, but I carry a Police circa 1985 at work. The only damage is that the tip is a bit discolored from a caustic drug field test. (I'm LEO) It's still every bit as tight as when I bought it. ('Course I don't use it as a pry bar!)

I have an ATS-55 Merlin and a Spyderhawk...have only used the Merlin so far and it's holding up fine.:)

'98 model endura (ats-55, no dent)... clip well long since rounded (caught the clip too many times). Lock is still solid, serrations and tip are both in great shape. Just got a leather sheath made for it... rides left/hip, tip down.

been abusing a ss/pe dragonfly since fall 2001. tip has been broken a couple times, blade has been thinned down to as low as it'll go by hand, edge has long since been convexed by hand. Have to pretty much lay my blade flat on the stone to make contact with the edge. I'll have to get around to taking pics of it again. Used to carry it 24/7/365, but have to make a new 550 cord for it.

Have an old rescue hiding in my collection, still have to get around to putting STR to work to recreate it for me. Integral clip, unmarked steel (think we had decided it was g2). if it wasn't for vertical movement on the lock it'd be carried.

Dyad jr micarta hiding there too, but doesn't get carried often. makes a nice dress knife.

I don't carry it as much as I used to, but I have an older Delica with the integral clip that was carried for a long time. Still locks up fine, the tip is a little worse for wear though.

I've got an AUS-8 Delica SE that is in great shape still. I just carried and used it today. Its the only SE blade that I've found I like.

I got a Delica with the molded clip used for $10.50 shipped, missing a bit of the tip. I made it look a bit like a salt series....well...actually, more like a a rescue mated with a delica....
I also have a snap-it, fine condition other than needed to be sharpened...
and then there's my Harpy. Also a broken tipped model I got on the cheap off of ebay, did a lot of work on the tip and it's got a point again....

I'm gonna be getting the profile stones set soon and I'll be fixing the rough serrated edges on all three of my oldies - better than i can on the sharpmaker anyway....I got them as heavy use knives that I could use and abuse without worry of damaging my good knives, and they do a great job of that.

Worst I've done to any of my own knives was managed to chip off a tiny bit of the tip of my civilian, and took a tip of one tooth off the same civilian, back in the late 90's when I used it for some utility stuff.

I EDC a C09 CoPilot with a PE G-2 (GIN-1) blade that is circa 1988. It's still going strong!

I EDC a very old (Blue) Delica SE (on occasion) and (Red) Ladybug SE....both back from the late 80's....I use the Red Ladybug almost daily...it's as good as the day I aquire it....a few blemishes on the blade of course other than that....just working fine each and every day....Doc:D

I bought a Standard and a Hunter at a home and garden show in the mid 80's. I carried the standard for sometime. I got rather frustrated at the difficulty sharpening a thick saber grind. Also carried a plastic tip Endura for a while; lost it for a year and found it, and carried this fully serrated knife when I when to the city. I have a preference for combo or plain edge.

My first spyderco, a FRN SE "G-2" endura with plastic clip is still EDCable. I still carry it at times, loose in my pocket now to protect the clip. It's from 92 or 93. Joe

I EDC an old Delica I plain with AUS-8 steel. Not too old, but 10 years aren't really new ;)

:spyder: :spyder: :cool: :spyder: :spyder: I still have, and still use my first 2 Spydies from 1994....A Rescue with se, and intragle plastic rh clip/aus-8 blade steel, and a Endura /pe, and ats-55 blade steel. I have used them both for hard, responsible use, and other than the rescue being a little tuff to open, and close, they work FLAWLESSLY!

I still carry/use on an almost daily basis my first generation PE Cricket. That little knife has never let me down.

pivot is strong, lock is strong, tip is broken, but still can stab well.

My 80's vintage C05 Standard just returned from a W&R sharpening trip. It also feels like the Spyder Folk tightened up a bit, too. Looks like it will be returning to the EDC rotation.

I happen to be carrying, a c25 centofante jr at the moment it is numbered ATS 34. with a dual locking mechanism in very thin flat grind, it is the safest and best set up liner lock I own. My only problem and this is kind of funny, is that it is show pointy. that is kind of tough to use in situations where you don't want to damage the rest of which are cutting, for instance a cigar or or such, if you're not careful. I also have a light blue Plainedge reconditioned cricket. , that I gave to a friend. after a minor failure. it may still be in some use.

First post, hello everyone! I realized that more than half of my knives are Spydercos, so I decided to join up. I don't really collect them as such, but I've noticed that they have a tendency to accumulate somehow...

Anyway, I carry and use a micarta-handled AUS-8 Calypso Jr. I also have the newer FRN/ZDP Calypso Jr and a few other knives, but that good old Caly Jr is my favorite, and has been ever since I got it. I know it's not really all that old, but it's been sharpened, rebeveled, sharpened, ground, sharpened and honed plenty of times. The edge is a bit straighter than it used to be, the blade is scratched up and the handles worn smooth as silk, but it works flawlessly. It still locks up as solid as any brand new knife and has no blade play as far as I can tell. The AUS-8 may not hold its edge quite as well as the newer steels, but it's plenty good enough for me and easy to get wicked sharp!

I prefer the full size versions also,
police, folding ti lum, mariner to name a few.
