View Full Version : How do you organise your Spydies ?

Here is a question which I don't think anyone has specifically asked. I think the question of storage has been asked, and the answers were varied and most interesting. However...... as an extension to that question....

How do you organise your Spyderco collection? (ie: when you store them in your boxes/ shelves/ cupboards/ displays)

1) Alphabetically
2) By SKU
3) By family type (ie: all leaf blades together, all ball locks together, all blue G10's etc...)
4) By collection (ie: all Native's together, all Kopas together etc..)
5) Randomly (my curent favourite. All users together, all safe queens in cupboard...anywhere I can fit them :p)

Curious to know how everyone here stores their knives. Pictures, if you need to of course, would also help in the illustration of your method of madness.

I ask this question mainly due to the fact that as my collection is growing I find that I am in need of a spreadsheet to keep my paperwork in order, and also a better method of sorting the knives physically rather than just a random placement in the safe and cupboard.

Cheers
Dan

Every single Spydie I have is carried on my person! :D

Although once I get more, I too, am going to have to invest in some sort of storage.

It presents an interesting conundrum for me. Because while there are so many knives that I want to get, I don't like buying knives for the sake of it, or for collector value; I only like to buy them if I'll actually use them (even if it may only be once a month in my own home :p )

Right now I only foresee acquiring 20 knives (and carrying 7 of them), so whatever storage I may need will hopefully be small. But at the same time, I feel that if I have a fewer number of knives, I can give them some more personal lodgings. Right now I'm contemplating the idea of a few cigar cases, lined with felt and divided into sections.

Of course, this is a projection of my current foreseeable collection. I'm sure once the 2008 catalog comes out, that future collection will grow. :D

One each: in my pocket, on my messenger bag, in my messenger bag, on my desk, and on my bureau.

By edge type, then by Model number.

mine are sitting in 4 steak boxes (i know i know) we get them for the firehouse, the steaks are vacuum packed so the box is clean and the spyderco boxes fit perfectly in them. :) i have one just for enduras, one for big knives, one for small and the last is for rare (wtc and kopas) and really small spydies. i have to get my but in gear and build me a display case soon.:o

I keep a couple that are in the EDC rotation on my nitestand. The others are organized by size in a chest that my dad made for me. They start with the Ladybugs on the upper right and progress to the Millies on the lower left. I store them with the clip up so they don't rock when opening the drawers.
I keep the boxes in a couple of Rubermaid bins in the closet.

I carry every Spyderco I own, some more frequently than others. At this point I'm not really sure how many I actually own. I would guess 20ish counting Byrds. They live in a basket on top of my desk between their stays in my pocket. I really can't afford to accumulate knives that I won't use at this point, so the basket works for me. I suppose at some point I would like to have a better storage method, but for now it works.

Big on one side of the drawer small on the other side of the drawer.

Since I only have big ones i really do not have the problem of sorting:D

2 spyderpacks. one full, the other half full. all the fixed blades outside of the packs in a drawer, with the packs on top. and about 15 floating around that i rotate my edc from, and also for cutting things open on the desk. i also keep one under the mattress just in case. although i'm not sure what that case would be

Big on one drawer side and small on the other - Enduras all together, Delicas all together, Calys... and so on, with clips up. I don't know what I'm gonna do if ... did I say "if"? ... WHEN I get more, though. :)

- best wishes, Jazz.

I use a spyderpack, not quite full yet. For the most part, I keep all the SS together and the H1's together then from there its by model.

Would height within weight count? Seriously, I have many knives but only 6 Spydies counting two that are enroute. I am arriving at the point where I need more storage space to keep them neatly arranged. Otherwise, I might have to dump them all in a barrel and work it out for themselves.

Dan, my system is rather disorganized.... :o
A few large Spyderpacs hold most my clipits.....one has the "fancy" folders like the Kopas, Kiwis, and anything w/SantaFeStoneworks on it...
another one for the "current" rotation clipits.... another for all my Byrds, Biscuits and Boker stuff....
I've got all my boxes stored separately in some trash bags  :)

Mostly by what I would call "family groups", Dan. For example all my various Jess Horn models, including a couple Beretta/Horns and non-Spyderco AGR/Horns are on one shelf. Same with Goddards. Same with Kopas, Qs, Natives, Delicas, and a few others. But there are also some non-family groups - all my Forum Models are on one shelf. There are also some "random groupings" - one shelf has a bunch of "grail" models that just don't fit anywhere else - Evo Set and 2 screw Worker, Laguiole, WTC Knife, among others. As for the Kiwis, they're slowly turning the small curio cabinet in my living room into their "family compound".

Mine are organized by type... all the Delicas together, all the Natives together, etc. I keep them in a large crate my wife bought me so my underwear could move back into its traditional home (the drawer).

This works better anyway. The crate sits on a shelf in our closet so I can walk in and pick the one I want. I keep them all in their original boxes and the boxes are stored on end with the label end facing up so I can see what's in each box.

Trouble is... since I got my G10 Caly 3, EVERYthing else lives in its box and the Caly 3 gets carried. Delicas... Natives... Para-Millie... H&K... Nomad... mini-SERE... mini-RSK... Sebenza... all of them just sit there... waiting...

Mine are organized by 1) ZDP knives, 2) the rest by age (approx) oldest to newest. They are in a box I can grab in emergencies. Another box holds my non spyders, and a gym bag type thing holds most of my fixed blades. Once again all are ready to go. Hurricanes can cause floods here in my valley so certain things always stay ready to leave. It's prioritized of course and there are things above the knives on the list of course. Car already has basic pioneer tools & camping gear plus a few other items. Joe

My EDCs are in the pockets or closet.
My backups in the desk.
My display pieces are in four shadow boxes: Kopas, Big knives, and two mixed.
Most likely with time it will be organized better, I just need to buy few more knives. :D

This is a hard one, how do I organize all 6 of them? It's pretty complex. Seriously though, having so many that organizing them would be necessary would be a good problem.

The NIB ones are put away in boxes so they will stay that way- NIB!

I currently only have two so it's very easy. But sometimes if i'm fealing really wild I switch them from side to side, native-left robin-right and vice versa. And if I want a good laugh I include a Gerber mini-paraframe for contrast:D

Top row, L-R: L'il Temperence, Big Manix, Para
Bottom row, L-R: Bob Lum Chinese, standard Millie, Millie in CF and BG-42, Millie in CPM D2 and foliage green, Mini Manix

Am I correct? :D

Oh, I only have three Spydies, so organizing them isn't much problem; they're usually all on me!

That is correct. They are all PE except for the Para, which is SE, and the regular Military, which is S30V CE (it was also a black blade, which coating has since been removed).

i have nearly 50 spydies
EDC rotation lives on my bedside table or in my pocket
Santoku lives in the kitchen
and the safe queens are all in a big glass cabinet, along with all the other stuff i want to display (like the tickets from the Guns and Roses concert i went to earlier this year)

Large Spyderpac for now; even though I only have 6 knives to store right now.

As the kids get older, I'll put them in a more secure spot (locking display cabinet and/or safe).

Rubbermaid tupperware box and then overflow gets stacked, have a whole shelf in a cabinet devoted to them...gotta find a new system soon, as I like to look at them, not just have 'em boxed up.
