I just received a package today! In it were three knives. I decided to open their boxes and examine them in order of which I was most excited about (ending with the one that I was most excited about...):
First up, my new PE Tasman Salt!
The hawkbill on this knife looks quite effective, and I cannot wait to test it out in the real world. I also can't wait to get ahold of it's brother (An SE Tasman Salt), who should be here on Thursday. :D
My only wish for this knife is that it had a flat-ground blade (I'm sold on flat-ground now. I love it), as I think the hawkbill blade combined with the slicing power of a flat-grind would be amazing.
But... I'm certainly not disappointed with the fact that the blade is saber-ground. As I feel it only enhances it's ability as a cutter geared towards somewhat rougher tasks (which is why I got a Salt)
Second... SE Caly3!
Wow. Everything about this knife just oozes quality. From the G-10 scales, to the finger choil, to the flat-grind (which admittedly isn't quite as impressive in an SE package, but more on that later...), the the small fact that when the knife is closed, the same blade choil that fits my finger so well lines up perfectly to form a choil on the back of the knife. A choil that, while serving no inherent purpose, looks beautiful (in my opinion), and speaks of the quality design of the knife.
One more thing. When I reviewed my new Swick, I posted that I was happy to have a knife with the distinctive "Golden, Colorado, USA Earth". Well, now I have another Spyderco knife with one of the hallmark icons of Spyderville. Sal's symbol on the back of the blade. :D
It's just something that I like knowing I have on my knife.
And, the pièce de résistance...
A CF/ZDP Caly3!
I absolutely love this knife. I love the smoothness of the CF scales. I love the fact that I get lost in the pattern of the CF. I love the flat grind, which I think truly shines in this model; the plain edge combined with the flat grind is the sharpest blade I have ever handled.
This knife feels like a quality knife. At first, I was somewhat turned off at the thought of spending $150 on this knife. But now that I have it, I realize that it is worth every penny. This is a beautiful knife, that is an incredible example of the quality of work that Sal and the gang do.
While I would like to have a serrated blade, I seriously think that if I were forced to only carry one knife for the rest of my life, I would choose the CF Caly3.
Well, that's my review/news. I would've posted pictures, but I figured that there are enough pictures of these models floating around, and that my thread was already long enough. ;)
Stay tuned, on Thursday I'll be getting 5 more knives! :D
