View Full Version : Superhawk: A New Hawkbill with High Expectations.

I am counting the days till the launch of the Superhawk. This New Spyderco Hawkbill will set new precedents and will undoubtedly dispel misconceptions about Hawkbill blades in general.
This new model I believe is going to prove that Hawkbill blades are an ideal second EDC knife that will work well in tandem with other great blade designs.
Hawkbills seem to be one of the most misunderstood blade designs on the market due to undue predjudices. Spyderco has already made huge headway with the legendary Harpy, Merlin & Tasman which all have proven themselves to be valuable working blades. The Superhawk I believe will be an icebreaker of sorts for more new Hawkbill blade designs coming down the pipeline.
The new Superhawk will indeed meet and excede it's expectations. So how many of you are going to get a new Superhawk? Do you all expect the Superhawk to end up being their flagship Hawkbill?

With lots of forumites singing the praises of this blade shape, I am interested in seeing this knife, photos anyone?:)
I have used similar shape blades in woodcarving, is accuracy and "fineness" of the cut they make the main positive as an EDC?

I too am very interested in this new hawkie. Honestly, this is the only new knife I think I really "need" to have! I'm sure it will make a nice addition to my small collection of :spyder: hawkbills. I almost always have one of my 3 hawkies on me along with another knife. I find them very complimentary to more conventional blade shapes and come in extra handy when I need to slip a blade under something to initiate the cut. Plus, I just like the way hawkbills look.

The only thing that would stop me from carrying that knife would be the fullness of my pockets from all of Spyderco's other awesome knives. :D
Although I do think that it would make a fine "nice clothes" carry in conjunction with my CF/ZDP Caly3, with the upcoming CF Kiwi nestled at the bottom of one of my pockets. I'll be a whirling dervish of Carbon Fiber Clad Cutting Power! :D
By the way, does anyone know the dimensions on this beauty?

I don't have any information as to its size...but if you want a taste of hawkbill, buy a nice Harpy for starters...and you'll see what the Hawkbill Craze is really all about...seriously, it's one of those things in life you just have to try for your own self...:D

I fell in love with hawkbills when I got my Tasman. Someone said it before, but I'll say it again. There's a reason that talons and claws are shaped like that (and, also... hawk's bills). :p
Say... one thing I was wondering. Does anyone know if the CF on this is glossy or peel-ply? I would assume peel-ply, but one can always hope.

Blackhair

It is indeed a Compression Lock. :D
It's just a small part of what makes the Superhawk so exciting.
And in relation to my earlier question, I found a quote by Sal, saying that the Superhawk is going to have Peel-Ply CF. Silly me.
catamount
12-05-2007, 02:57 AM
I hope it's the same peel-ply as on the Stretch 2, not the rougher version that was on the CF Military. It looks that way in the prototype pic.
I know some like the glossy, but as far as I'm concerned, they should use the S2 peel-ply for all future CF scales. It's the only kind I actually prefer over G10.
Mr Blonde

The prototype I handled on the Amsterdam Meet this year, where I took these pics, had the same type of handle as the Stretch II; a smoother peel-ply-ish CF handle. I just wish it would come with some teeth on the edge.

If anyone at the Great Spyder Factory is checking out this thread I have just one suggestion I would like you all to consider concerning the Superhawk.
First of all I would love some Jimping on the blade spine ( at least an inch or so). I would also love to see if they could be offered with a combo edged and/or serrated blade. We have yet to see a Spyderco Hawkbill with a CE blade. However a fully serrated one would fit my wishes >> Do you agree with me AREND :) ????? I don't ever want to see Spyderco abandon what helped to bring them this far>> that being the Spyderedge ;)
What might the rest of you think about that suggestion? Even if you don't like serrations you got to admit that Spyderco's are the best ones on the market.
Holy SpyderEDGE!!!! Batman :D
Blackhair

Jimping is absolutely essential, IMHO.
I'm not so crazy about CE, but I would love an SE version of this blade. Certain blade geometries just call for certain blade types (for instance, I think that the Caly3 is more suited to PE, but isn't hurt by SE), and the Superhawk calls for an SE version! (And PE)
Give us both, please! *makes puppy dog eyes* :p

Totally agree with the jimping on the spine. I really like it on my Tasman and my Harpy and Merlin feel a little naked in comparison without it. Also, I'm not a fan of CE blades in general, but would definitely like to see this knife offered in both PE and SE configs.

Wow! Out of the BatCave early in the morning and chock full of ideas as always, JD...jimping would be nice...as for the PE, I'm happy with it as it is, I like the nice, clean, elegant, ever-so-slightly curved edge of the new blade, but I totally vote for a SE and CE version to please all the Spyderheads. :D
I can only see the offering of more than one edge configuration translating into more sales for Spyderco, since it will give collectors a reason to buy more than one of these knives, and it will give users who might need those serrations an impetus to buy it, who may not otherwise...
And, yeah, Spyderco's serrations do totally rock!

I know I've beat that drum concerning a CE blade quite a few times but I've just never seen a Hawkbill in CE. It would be curious to see just how they would sell. That would be another "First" for Spyderco.
I too love the elegance of a PE Hawkbill as I own many of them myself. However for hard use I have found few of them that are as good of users as my G-10 SE Harpy. There are some folks who are going to use these blades instead of building enviable collections>>> and for those who are hard users of Hawkbills we need to help them facilitate a better workday.
I'm just more than glad that the Spyderco Hawkbill tradition won't die but will have a "Phoenix" of a rebirth and will spur the use & collecting of these fine blades. The Harpy has made it's statement and now it's time to move forward. Using is believing with newer, misunderstood blade types as I personally discovered with the Dodo. Time to turn the page and get ready for the next chapter.

Hi, I'm new, but I couldn't help but wonder:
Isn't the Byrd version of the Hawkbill available in both PE and CE?
I just bought the PE version cause the shop I buy my knives from doesn't sell the CE version.
I'm hoping for a G-10 version of the Byrd sometime in the future, because that would be awesome, and eventually hope to buy a proper Harpy/Superhawk.

I think that once this knife comes out, it, along with a G-10 PE Caly3, will be my main EDC's.

The Superhawk will be here I'm sure in the next few weeks. The Harpy will finally have a successor and companion blade for Hawkbill users.
Oh sure collectors will gobble up a few of them but there will be many users sold as well. With a curvature being a bit less than it's predecessor the Harpy it will more than likely appeal to many Hawkbill users and set the stage for growing Hawkbill usage.
I do see a new trend on the horizon concerning Hawkbills and specialty Spyders in general. With the Superhawk and P'Kal paving the way I'm sure we'll be seeing many more specialty Spyders that will appeal to users as well as collectors.
This could be a very pivotal move on Spyderco's behalf in regard to marketing more specialty knives. Let the show begin

Shamedly to admit I don't know the exact dimensions of the SUPERHAWK but I do know that it's size lies between the Harpy & Spyderhawk.
I don't think that the SUPERHAWK will be alone because I do believe that it will stir up fanfare for future Spyderco Hawkbills.
This model will provoke Spyderco knife users to take Hawkbills seriously as users. The SUPERHAWK without a doubt is a new Chapter for utility blades.

I hope that its size is closer to the Harpy than the Spyderhawk. Not only do I prefer smaller knives (around a 3" blade), due to having small hands; but I think that a slightly smaller blade would help promote a somewhat more sheeple-friendly aura (along with the plain edge and shallow curve of the knife).
While I think that the Superhawk has the potential to open people's eyes toward the abilities of hawkbills, I think that a larger knife could be a real turnoff for a lot of people.
If it is a larger knife, might I put forward the suggestion of a Mini-Superhawk? :D

The Superhawk has a 3.5" blade.

Thanks for the dimensions, catamount.
Well, 3.5 inch blade is admittedly a little bit larger than I would have liked, but I'll just have to wait and see.
One of the things that I noticed when I got my Pacific Salt was how much bigger it felt than my Cara Cara, even though the Pacific is actually a hair smaller! I'm not sure why my Cara Cara seemed to have such an illusion of smallness (maybe the finger choil), but perhaps the Superhawk will have the same illusion of smallness to it.
That's what I'm hoping for, anyway. ;)

I haven't spoken with anyone in Golden regarding price, but it seems to me that $320.00 MSRP would be a tad high since the Stretch II has full-tang ZDP-189 and the same CF handle material, yet retails for "only" $279.95....?
Based on the Stretch II price, I would have guesstimated around $249.95 with VG-10 steel.
