What's a good hunting Spydie

OK, for all you hunters out there, here is a question I need to know before next fall,(I know it's early, but...)What is the best Spydie for field dressing big game?

Try the wegner, or maybe a moran. The peter herbst is also similar. The ocelot will be replacing the wegner. There is also an impala coming out.

Here's a pic of the Ocelot prototype.
As well as G-10 scales the prototype has duel nested steel liners, which if it makes it to the final release should make the handle / blade rock solid.

The large, plain edge Wegner (C48) is fabulous for big game hunting, that much I know. It is perfectly made, beautifully designed, fairly light, comfortable to use and carry, brute strong, and takes/holds a fabulous shaving sharp edge with ease. It also makes an excellent EDC knife; I carry mine IWB on the right side.

By virtue of the design of this knife, perhaps the blade shape...this knife is big enough for any job yet doesn't seem to freak people out as much as other similarly sized designs, in my experience.

I like all of my Spydies, but if I had to pick the one that represents the very best value of all considering it's price vs utility, the large Wegner would be it.

The Wegner for sure.The Ocalot is alot more expensive with a simalar blade but looks 100 times better IMO G10 with paw prints.SO in short,deep pockets Ocalot,Job like mine Wegner,well with a job like mine pakastan lock blade.

As for a largish Spyderco to process game, it seems like the Chinook would be right up your alley. Great steel, solid lockup, really secure grip. The only thing which scares some people off is the prospect of cleaning a folder.

Keepin' it real...real sharp, that is.

While the chinook would work, it wasn't made for that type of use. It was intended as a MBC style knife. Go with the wegner, it will serve you well

I see the Chinook as a capable skinning knife, but with it's sharp, extended point you would have to be careful using it to field dress as a stomach puncture would be hard to avoid while &quot;unzipping&quot; the game.

The Wegner, with it's &quot;drop point&quot; design works very well in this capacity. At least it did for me this year.

Don't overlook the Mouse. It is a surgically efficient mini-skinner and GW has skinned and dressed many a critter with it. It happens to fit in a watch pocket too. So the Mouse and a larger Wegner , or Military should get the job done with ease...

The Moran Drop Point is good too.

Try the Military. I have both the Wegner and Military and both are fine knives. However, the Military is MUCH easier to clean. IMO this makes it more suitable as a hunting knife.

My favorite hunting spyderco is the pro-venator with the 40/60 blade. It is smaller than the wegner, but the shape of the handle and blade is perfect. It is also my fovorite all around EDC knife.

The drop point Moran, hands down, period. The others will work, but I've never liked a folding hunting knife (even my Master Series 110) as well as a fixed blade. The Morans are nicely compact without being overly small, and are plenty of knife, even being elbow deep in an elk. They have a unique rolled edge (hamiguri-ba, clamshell edge)that is scary sharp, seemingly moreso than other Spydies. Its the Spyderco that is most directly made for the purpose you want, and even comes with a cool sheath. The others are kinda pressing a knife into service that will work but aren't purpose built, with the exception of the Wegner. But its still not my first choice.

Its all fun and games til somebody loses an eye, then its fun and games you can't see.
