This may not be the battle of the century for you but it is for me. This battle decides the last knife I will buy until I get a job. This battle decides the knife that I will carry the most as a solo-EDC instead of part of a multiple carry-EDC. This battle will make me love Spyderco even more.

The battle is between a Wegner Plain Edge and a Starmate Plain Edge...

*battle music plays*

Battle Begins....

BTW disregard the other post about the next knife I am going to buy....

Good Luck, man. If I were you, I go for the PE Starmate. One awesome knife. But then, what Spyderco isn't?

A little reminder, when in 'battle', don't be like the dude in the Civil War who wore Confederate pants and a Union coat. The rebs shot him in the chest and the Feds shot him in the hindermost parts!

-Doesn't really apply to knife buying, but hey, it makes a good story......

There have been many threads on this dilemma. Its not a critical decision to me as either is capable of serving my needs in the field. I think of these as "field" knives; large, capable companions to rely on while fishing, hunting, camping. Knives I consider carrying whenever I put on my boots.

My best advice is to hold 'em, fold 'em, you'll be sold on 'em. I gravitate to the Starmate for a little considered difference.... Its tip down.

Wegner plainedge.I had a starmate cost me 6 stitches when the lock failed. That's why I'll only carry a compression or chinook lock.

what kind of lock caused you this battlemark?

My serrated 60/40 Terzuola Starmate has been my EDC since I got it a few days ago. It's quite an impressive knife. The lockup seems very strong and tight. It's also has a very beautiful 5mm blade. I did a side-by-side comparison of said Wegner and my Starmate just this afternoon. Honestly, I'd want to carry both but if I had to pick one, it would be the Starmate.

I don't know of any lock failures with this knife however, I did notice that if you were to grip the knife in such a way so that your index finger falls on top of the lock, you could possibly exert enough pressure to release the linerlock. A friend that was handling it squeezed just enough to do this. Luckily, no blood. Just a blank stare. <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>

about 10 monthes ago that was my second or third post on the forum and after a long &quot;battle&quot; . . . the wegner. mainly the shape of the handle. i really love the grip. but in your case i might get the starmate and then an ocalot with the compression lock. if they come out with a &quot;starmate II&quot; with a compression i might just have to get that. good luck.

Between those two, its easy: the Starmate wins, even on edge retention abilites alone. 440V far exceeds ATS 34 in this respect. For my size XL hands, the Starmate is a more comfortable handle shape. And, its fun to watch people try to pronounce Terzuola for the first time. Any one can pronounce Wegner. I wonder if he ever uses the line from Monty Python and the Holy Grail? &quot; Some call me...Tim?&quot; OK, I'll stop. Its late again...

Its all fun and games til somebody loses an eye, then its fun and games you can't see.
