View Full Version : VG-10 Vs ATS-55
What are the differences? good and bad about both these steel types.
It looks like Delicas are now made with VG10 instead of my old Delica that was made with ATS55 steel...
Help =)

ATS-55 was a proprietary formulation only used by Spyderco. It was basically a less expensive reformulation of ATS-34, without the latter's "high speed" properties. It has good edge retention, but suffered from erratic corrosion resistance. It is now discontinued.
VG-10 was developed for horticultural use, and is produced by a single foundry in Japan. It has better corrosion resistance, better edge retention, and a finer grain that either of the ATS steels. In simple terms: the edge gets sharper, lasts longer, and no rust.
As far as I can tell, there's no "bad" with VG-10. I suspect its formula was stolen from the Gods.

Tightwad, are you just waxing on Carlos so that when he has a Golden CO address you'll have an in? Just kidding man. I wondered about those two steels myself-Thanks Carlos.

having and abusing the ats-55 Delica for 2 yrs, I have gotten a good view on this...
ats-55 will hold a good edge for light use, but under heavy use(boxes by the tonnes) needs daily sharpenings. I was lucky and got one of the few that didn't rust, but see complaints popping up all the time on BF about ats-55. Flatgrind will pick this steel up(compare a delica to a dragonfly)
VG-10... Steel of the gods...
Only had the Calypso jr, lt, for 2 months(oct 26th), I can already tell yah that. This is my primary carry, though teamed up with the SS Dragonfly(flat/ats-55) for hard use. I have yet to dull it, though it has been touched up once.
We all start with 10 fingers. Those with Spydies have 9 to spare, Still need a thumb. Good thing I still have 8 to spare...

I've never had a blade of ATS-55, or any other steel, rust. With me, knife care has always been a wipedown with an oily leather glove after use. That's always worked for me!
Keepin' it real...real sharp, that is.

i agree with sword and shield... never have I had a knife rust, 55, 34, or vg 10. it isnt a matter of the steel at all, only the amount of care given to it.... after all, the indians use flint, for god sake.

I have had 2 spydies with ats-55. I used to carry them iwb but had a problem with them rusting easily. just spots of course, i clean my knives regularly. I just ordered a calypso jr and can't wait to test it out.

Folks,
I've never had any problems with ATS-55 rusting, and that is while implementing a lot of IWB carry.
