Ok, I finally made up my mind. I think my next knife will be a Starmate. Can anyone tell me who has the best price on the Web for these guys?? I heard that they are now discondtinued, so I wanted to get one before the panic sets in........

Thanks Forumites!

Agreed.

johnfjensen seems to have the best price on a Starmate. I've checked the usual suspects recently and have not found a lower price. If you were to check eBay, average prices there have been hovering around $104 +/-. Occasionally, you'll find one for less but it's not always a sure thing.

Do you want instant gratification? Go with johnfjensen.com. Call first. You'd want to make sure he has them in stock.

By the way, Excellent choice! My serrated Starmate is my current EDC along with my Native FRN.

Thanks fellas for the info on the Starmate. I just couldn't stand to buy it somewhere and then find out that I could have gotten somewhere else for $20 cheaper.:-)

BTW Lsaulog, how does the Native hold up for you on a daily bases? I have looked at getting a Native someday, but I'm not sure as to what I'd like better: Stainless Steel handles, or the FRN 'web' design. How do you like yours?

SpyderNut,

I just purchased 4 Spydies from John Jensen last week, he does have great prices. He's real professional and courteous, he only sells discontinued Spydies. I just ordered (yesterday) 3 more Spydies. I'm such an addict.

I have a FRN Native P/E and really enjoy that little knife!! Don't let the size fool you. As for S/S versus FRN, I'd have to go with the FRN. But that's "my" preference. I have only one S/S Spydie, a Police model. I'd say the only down side to S/S is if it gets wet it's slippery. If you had large hands the FRN would fit better. Natives are quite popular, I'd say the majority of forumites here have at least one. Hope this helps!

Thanks Hoosierdaddy, for the insights on the FRN Native. I think you talked me into it....I'll go give Mr. Jensen a visit pretty soon!
You know, I would like to collect the whole Spyderco line, [who doesn't?] but I just don't know what order to get them in!!

*stands up on soapbox*

I Love my Native! It's one of the most comfortable knives in Spyderco's lineup. The ergonomics are excellent, the carry comfort with the FRN is tops. An amazing level of control with either SS or FRN due to deep choil and textured blade spine.

I also own the Native II (SS) but don't carry it as often due to weight and lack of tactile grip with wet/sweaty hands. Even with the deep choil, I don't get a confident hold with wet hands. Still Love it, though.

The FRN is my EDC. I barely feel the weight in my pocket. The blade size is just right for everyday use. Sharp as heck, too. The 35/65 combo edge on the FRN is handy. The 50/50 of the SS Native is just the right balance, though.

As far as maintaining the razor-like sharpness, I'll do a light sharpening every week or so on my 204 Sharpmaker. (heavy usage) It will hold it's edge well beyond 3 weeks between sharpening but I like to maintain that razor's edge on the CPM 440V steel.

Do I like it? Nope. I LOVE IT! Which is why I shelled out a big can of beans for the rare Blue Native.

Would I buy another one? Heck yes and then some! Especially in FRN. G-10 handles with a VG-10 blade would be heaven! Increase the blade size to 4&quot; for a &quot;King Sized Native&quot;, and you've got perfection! IMHO. <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>
