In this age of natural disasters ( i.e. floods, storms, hurricanes, etc. )
it pay's to be prepared. I just got this in an e-mail -

I'm going to order one. Simply lose the "5 function knife" and replace
with a good ol' spydie. One can even add to this kit. For $36 it's worth
it. Okay -
What say the augurers?

AET,
I found www.equipped.org a good site too. I have the small survival kit (no knife but the great fox40 micro whistle). This is also the primary site for the ritter grip blades. The mini is basically a BM mini grip, which I found not quite comparable to the Caly Jr in VG10 and more than double the price when you could buy stock VG10 Caly Jr's.
Also relating to your thread title. Ready.gov The US built webite on preparedness.
Chris
Allen, that looks like a decent, basic kit.
If you want another website that is overflowing with good survival items, check out TADGear.com. They've got a lot of stuff, knives, flashlights (you'll go nuts just checking out all their flashlights!), other gear.
I'd be certain to add a few firestarters to your kit, Allen. Matches and Ferro rods are good. I also like cotton balls that have been dipped/smeared with petroleum jelly - talk about quick-lighting and fierce-burning! When you get one of those babies going, things are gonna burn!

I prefer to carry a kit I made myself that has much more than what that kit offers for $35.
First off it doesn't say what's in the 32 piece first aid kit included in that kit. I would hope at least a needle and thread among other things....

Jimd & the gang -
Here's a couple of good links :

But for adding on to these try these two -
www.CheaperThanDirt.com
they have a lot of things like water purification tablets, tinder, firestarters...
Birgade Quatermasters ( the brainchild of the late col. Mitch Werbell )
http://www.actiongear.com/cgi-bin/tame.exe/agcatalog/articles/511/511.tam
has some good items as well, however it's hard to beat CTD.

As a habit from my old army days I still equip every car with "pioneer tools" that stay in the trunk at all times. ( axe, shovel, pick), siphoning hose, gallon can ( empty), oil, duct tape, battery pack w jumper cables & compressor, tow strap, tarp, etc. Things get added and subtracted as needed but the pioneer tools , hose and can always stay.
Nowadays I even carry a solar panel that could recharge the car or battery pack. First aid pack & flares are a given.
By the way, I live in a valley that could flood in a hurricane so I always take extra precautions when storms approach. Joe
