I am a bookbinder, I "remove" leather from the flesh side, so that the leather will cover board or allow annother bit of leather to be "onlayed".

But I want to do this with a spyderco knife. What model would members suggest?

Hi Deirdre,

Welcome to the Spyderco Forum.

What size of knife would you find most useful for this special application?

Blade length?
Narrow or broad handle?

I like a knife about four and a half inches long and a broad thick blade. I also am sure that I don't want a kitchen knife.

Diedra - After looking over Spyderco's line of knives I think the Catcherman would be your best bet. It has the longest blade ( 4 5/16 cutting) and is made to filet fish. rr

In folding knives, perhaps a Military or Chinook, depending upon whether you like a lower or higher point. Both about 4" blades, 4mm thick.

In fixed blades, the new Perrin bowie or the Temperance FB, again depending upon whether you prefer a high or low point. The Perrin will be released commerically in a couple weeks, the Temperance FB sometime next year.

If you like a filet pattern, Spyderco also has some new filet knives (with sheathes) coming out in 2002.

With the blade at just 4 inches, the Moran FB02 drop point is close to your specification. The steel is definitely up to the task and the handle is shaped for long periods of work with soft rubber inserts. It is very strong and you wouldn't have to worry about the lock strength or accidentally unlocking the blade under pressure cutting at strange angles.

And maybe best of all, it's very affordable.
