:spyder: These knives are awesome! I know Vincent has said for years how great the Millie was but I don't care for tip-down carry and liner licks can come closed in the hand and blah, blah, blah, (insert negative internet meme here).

A while ago I got a foliage green d2 millie and was impressed with how light it carries and how strong and tight the lock up is, no blade play at all.

I polished the d2 steel's edge for two days on the fine then ultra fine stones and the edge never rolled. It's the first knife I've had that can cleanly slice free hanging toilet paper and paper towel in a swipe without tearing, to me this is impressive. The fg millie has the strongest detent of any knife I own, I can only kinetically open this knife with cartoonish force and wide motions. I train the use of gross motion two handed openings in MBC so this is fine with me.

Today my carbon fibre bg-42 millie arrived (expensive!:o my wife freaked! I donated plasma and saved up for this so as to not impact the household budget, but still! Yow!) what a beauty! I love the feel of the peel ply! Now this is grippy! Grippier than G-10! I hope the traction lasts longer than g-10. Pretty though. The bg-42 Millie has a much lighter detent than the green one, a light flick and it slides open and locks up as tight as the d2 millie, like a fixed blade. I haven't cut or sharpened it at all yet just still playing with it enjoying its lighter detent and flickability. Fun fun.

And the whole "Liner locks can close in the hand during a fight" thing? I've yet to find any MBC grip or manipulation that'll unlock the liner except the safe thumb on liner method that in no way can be mistaken for a fighting grip of any sort. Just more internet crap rumors getting endlessly repeated.

I'm still toying with the idea of sending the green one off to get a tip up conversion since the detent is so freacishly strong (not gritty or stiff, just solid and strong) but I've switched a e4 trainer to tip down to get used to this weird and wrong carry configuration and will wait a month or two. The bg-42 is so light I'll leave it tip down although it could be done safely carried against the rear pocket seam as I do with my beloved Yoji with its light detent or the P'kal. Still this knife opens really easily (and I like it)

Bottom line, I really like the millie and will soon need to get one fully serrated! (After the super hawk, and the foliage green e4&d4, and the p'kal trainer, and the white e4&d4, arrrrrgh! I'm way too poor for this hobby! ) :spyder:

I agree with you too buddy. I never knew what I was missing until Vincent let me borrow his PE Military for about a week. From that point on I was sold on it. Just read my threads about it. :)

Today I am carrying my black bladed Para. Most days I do carry a Military at some time or another.

The Spyderco Military is the only liner lock knife I have ever trusted. I will carry and own many Mili's in my life. ;)

I think the Military is quite possible the best knife ever made.....liner lock and all. The way Sal and crew make their liner locks just spank liner locks from all other companies.

I used to be hooked on the larger MBC and SD blades, then gave them up in pursuit of happiness with the Natives, Kopas, and Delicas. However, since getting my mitts lately on the FG Military D2 I can't help being fascinated at the quality of the piece.

The Millie swings out smoothly and "clicks" into a solid lock with absolutely no iota of play in any direction whatsoever. Plenty of meat in the liner lock to allow for wear, but I canoot see it wearing out anytime soon.

It is so much fun to play with too. With its long handle and long blade it begs to be flicked out :D

It is steering me in the direction of getting a vanilla flavoured black G10 Millie for EDC..... a far cry from my current EDC rotation of small to mid-sized blades :p. It looks like I will be heading back toward the larger end of the spectrum with more of Keating's work ;) as well as the venerable Millie and possibly even the P'kal for some reverse action :)

Cheers

thanks for the Millie review and congrats on the CF BG42 version Michael.... impressive how solidly the linerlocks perform on the Military without needing a "bulkier"/thicker liner

Well Michael and David I am glad you both love your Millie's. I carry MY PE version most days. But I carry the SE version everyday in pack. I mostly carry this knife when I am up at school, as they tend to much more Knife friendly than in NYC.

I also loved the feeling of getting my first one. My family and i thought the knife was just Huge. I mean Huge. Now its Normal I guess.

The Millie and Manix were my recent acquisitions. I got the CF Millie in BG-42. Why did I wait so long???!!! I touched the edge up with the fine white stones and it scary sharp. The lockup is solid. The one I have is collector numbered so it's staying in my collection but will be acquiring another as a user. This is one incredible knife and I'm glad I finally have one. If you're "thinking" about a Millie, don't. Just get one! You won't be disappointed.

I'd either EDC the D2 since it is a more discrete colour, unless you wear black, or get a BG42 Millie. I haven't used my black one since getting the BG42 and D2 Millies:D
If you can snag an older black Millie they are actually lighter without the new second liner. Might want to try CE if it is for hard use:)

The Military/SE IS the greatest Spydie so far:cool:

Darn, just as I was trying to be satisfied by carrying just my D4, all this talk makes me want to carry my Millie again:( :D

Going down town today but I think I'm gonna carry my Millie regardless(coupled with my Ladybug III/SE that is)

I often do this, but with a Jester instead of the Ladybug. If I need to be PC out comes the Jester and the Millie if I don't need to worry:D

Michael, thanks for the review! The BG-42 Millie is high up on my list of must-haves for the coming year. Like some others here, I always thought the Millie was too much knife for EDC and preferred smaller blades. But, thanks to Mr. Blonde's original pics of his D2 Millie, I pulled the trigger a couple of months ago and now my D2 is my favorite knife along with my Chinook III (yes two very big knives!). Shortly after getting my D2, I snagged a CE S30V version for little dollars and have had the same experiences which is to say, I just love the whole Military platform, regardless of handle color, blade steel or blade configuration. I'm not a collector, but I already have plans to pick up a black-baded PE as well as at least one SE Millie (maybe a plain AND a black-bladed one:D ) to round out my Military family.

Anyway, thanks again Michael for making want this most expensive Millie even more - my wife will have the same reaction yours had  .

the para was my favorite for a long time, i always said "what do i need a mili for, the para is smaller, and has a compression lock", i was so wrong, a week ago i bought a D2 mili, and i also think it's the bast knife i'v owned, the fit and finish on it are just amazing, i was never a fan of buying more then one of each model, but i really want a PE S30V mili, and a PE stain para.

i really understand now all of the talking about the mili bing so great.

I like smaller knives, due to the fact that I have small hands, so I haven't really been interested by the Millie. But I can certainly see the need for a larger blade, and might have to look into this knife. :)

Curse you, forum! Curse you! You always make my wishlist bigger! Never smaller!!

:D :p

The military is indeed a great knife. I just find it too big for me. However, it doesn't stop me from selling them at the gun shows! :spyder:
