View Full Version : Mule Team Issues - READ ME PLEASE

We know we had a few issues with the initial release of the Mule Team. Thanks for your patience. We'll be adding inventory to the site as needed (keep in mind, SFO staff does go home at night ;) ).

We apologize to those who had an incorrect shipping charge added to their order. There was a glitch in the code. It's been fixed and anyone who was erroneously charged freight will receive a credit.

Now for some issues that are not on our side...

There are some folks who have ignored the limit of 2. We've written basic code to enforce the limit in the shopping cart, but I would rather NOT have to ask our Webmaster to write code to block every possibility around the basic system. We've got many other priorities for the site that we'd prefer he focus on.

The original rule was a limit of 2 per person per address. IF Sales permit, we may open that limit, but only once sales of MT01P have indicated that everyone who wants to participate has been able to do so.

For anyone who placed multiple orders to get around the 2 piece limit, your second order will be held. It will not be shipped and you will not be charged. Once we can review them all we'll determine if the "multiples" will be canceled.

For anyone who ordered and then had a spouse order, the limit applies to your household. So again, the second order will be held.

We had hoped that the limit would be adhered to on the honor system. We hope we don't need to impose any more restrictions to the site to maintain the integrity of the project.

For everyone who has already ordered and followed the 2 piece limit, Thank You!

Thanks for your cooperation.

Kristi

I too must chime in. We really had no idea that there would be so much immediate interest in the project. It seems that more than just "steel junky's" are getting involved. There should be enough to go around. If not, we'll figure out how to deal with it.

This is new territory for all of us as it is a new concept. I'm sure we'll improve on the next one.

Thank you.

Would it be possible to post the "names" of the scaliwags who tried to over order? These individuals could not have been ordering mules in accordance to Sal's stated policy of making them available. There are those who might be ordering extras as gifts so maybe I am being harsh here.

In any case I would appreciate knowing who here cheats (with numbers) on a good person doing a good thing for us and the company.

Thank you Sal & Kristi (and everyone else helping and making these knives). I haven't ordered one yet (but I will) and I'm glad to see you trying to enforce the 2 per person limit. We "little guys" appreciate it.

Cheers :)

Shiny footprints Slick. :)

Besides as stated by Taz, there may not be enough demand so those who ordered more may get them. Time will tell it is all new.

Slick,

As far as I know Sal and crew by now, I'd think that there's not a single chance to get that list. No squealing here.

Besides, there's no connection between the Forum name and the SFO account, AFAIK. They don't even have to be part of the forum community.

After the initial hype is over and the dust has settled, I'm sure we will find out that anybody who wanted a Mule will have gotten one (at least!).

So, thanks again Sal and crew for this great project and see you in Solingen in a few weeks!

To Sal, Kristi, Lynnette, Jim, and anyone else whose names I dont know at the SFO. Thanks for such a great project. For those of us steel junkies, I cant tell you how excited I am to use my new mule. I have had longboard and bicycle bearings made from 52100 or years and always thought it would make a great knife. Its seems to be great so far, with my total of one day of use. So again thanks for undertaking a project like this for us. I cant wait to see what the next steel will be.

As well I'm sorry that the system is being abused. I would have hoped that this kinda thing wouldnt have happened as I respect many of the folks on this forum and it makes me sad that some of our fellow forumites would not follow the simple limit of 2 knives.

Anyways back to the good stuff. Thanks again so much for all your work. One of these days I would like to take you all for drinks, or coffee, or something... Kudos to the folks at Spyderco...

I think Im going to go cut something with my new Mule... Maybe a sandwich:D

I dont really want to open my refrigerator door. Do you think 52100 could cut threw it:D

i was wondering about the shipping charge... in fact, thinking i had to pay an extra $8, i ordered one instead of two.

might go back now to order a second... these knives seem too good to pass up... :D

I wholeheatedly agree with you Tricod & would like to personally thank everyone involved as well.

I was able to show some of my appreciation by my invlovement in the pizza party some of us here got together on & threw for the folks in Golden but that was only a small token of my appreciation. I wish I could do more.

Thanks for doing what you do for us :)

Mike,

I am Scott Gere. I make Mule sheaths. Months back I designed a sheath for the Mule without a handle and one with the handle for sal. I use the boltaron and they will be equiped with the G-clip when available. I've been using the small techlok until the G's come out.

With all the people that ordered, and were charged the incorrect amount, let's say optimistically 300 individual orders, you may have to be patient. Your credit card may not show it immediately. But most likely they are having to refund each amount individually, one at a time, in the order they were received. so you may be number 299 on the list.

But believe me, the folks in the SFO are working double- and triple- time to get this straightened out, and make everything right for all those involved

I received my Mule Team order yesterday!

And I want to express a special thanks to Lynette at SFO for making sure that my order got to me. I had called day before yesterday to ask about my order status. Lynette confirmed that it had been shipped and was due to be delivered yesterday. She mentioned the address, and it turned out that it sounded like my street but it wasn't! Lynette got on the phone with UPS right away and was able to correct the address with them. She was very gracious and friendly, and I really get her commitment to customer delight.

Some of you tried to cheat and get more than 2?

You might want to find a new knife company. I don't think Spyderco's the one for you. Don't worry, there are plenty of other knife companies out there where I'm certain you'll feel right at home.

That's quite a high horse there.
I for one didn't know about the limit, and they let me know when I ordered.
I don't think anyone was "cheating"

I'm referring to people who knew about the limit and tried to get around it. And in that regard, I'm quite comfortable on my horse.

I’m really disappointed with the way this was done. I must have called Spyderco five times to ask when these would be released and all I got was “check the forums… any time now.” I asked if I would get one because of being a collector… No answer.

(snip)
We'll need to improve the way they go out. Too much stress and error on this first release. If we do a "pre sign up", we'll have to do a deposit thing, combined with record keeping really adds more processing costs.

Tazkristi stated in one of the other threads that collectors would get the first model through their normal vendor. So, yes, you'll get at least the 52100 model. I got an e-mail from my vendor already.

In that same post, Tazkristi also said that for this program only the collector numbers would come through SFO. We'll have to do a contract like for the Kopa program.

It seems really simple to just pre pay when we know what steel it will be.

The people wo tried to cheat should not get first dibs on the extra Mules.

I have tested mine cutting leather and same(stingray) for my Mule's wrap and it cuts much better than the very similar Strider ED in S30V but needs a little work on the edge to keep it cutting well. It did start to show some stains though after cutting pork but nothing that would affect performance.

They were on the forum for 3-5 days. I'm sorry you missed out, but don't blame customer service. They do a good job and minor hiccups like this happen once in a while. Plus you already have one and others might not even get a chance for one.

It seems that there was a greater demand for the Mule team knives than anticipated. I don't feel like it has anything to do with Spyderco Customer Service. If anything there were lots of people who did not reply to the initial Mule team thread saying they were interested, and then purchased a knife or 2.

If everyone who was interested did reply initially, there would have been more than 600 made. I am sure they did not pull this number out of a hat, but based it on the number of individuals who expressed interest in the project.

I commend :spyder: customer service for handling this as well as they did. Kudos to Sal for coming up with the project. Nothing like this has been done in the industry before as far as I know. I am sure like anything else in life, there is a learning curve. Improvements may have to be made to the project as it goes.

Congratulations to everyone who had a hand in making the Mule Team a reality.

It was a great idea, the knifes look excellent, and now we can all see what top notch 52100 is all about. Maybe it's different at Spyderco, but I rarely see a project come off without a minor bug or two.

Thanks to Sal and the whole Spyderco crew.

Great work!

I thought they would be a lot cruder. I was expecting no logo but the round hole in the blade and maybe a 52100 stamp but it was just as beautiful a packaging as any Golden product.

It would be good if instead of special runs there was a mule team blade permanently in the catalogue. I think most of us are buying these blades becase they are excellent VFM and will make superb user knives, not necessarily to compare steels. putting one in the catalogue and making it available to distributors would solve a lot of the problems we experienced in the UK. The $40 blade ended up costing over $100 once the postage and import fees were added.

I should add that I really like my MT knife, its ergonomics are excellent. Thanks all at Spyderco for putting such a superb blade out so cheaply.
