If you were stranded out somewhere in the outback,wilderness,etc.-survival situation, which would be your first and only choice Spydie knife be.Only one knife to depend on.
i would go with the Endura-combo-edge-VG10.

I think I'd take one of the fixed blades. A chopper, but not the biggest one. I'm not sure if I'd want H1 or N690Co. I don't know enough about H1 in large choppers. Joe

If the rules are only 1 - for a survival knife I think it would have tobe a fixed blade, and for me that would be a Forager FB17P:spyder:

Fixed blade for me. Of what Spyderco has available right now, I'd go with the H1 Rock Salt.

a fixed blade would be preferable... i'd probably want the rock salt, or even an aqua salt. (but they aren't out yet!!!!). in the meanwhile, afraid my BM fecas offsider in N690 is going to have to serve the purpose.
in a folder, probably either a mili or a pacific salt, depending on the environment.
but really... i'm going to have a number of knives with me... all the time...! :D

Hi Clovisc ! In the Alaska environment please consider something that goes bang ( a very big bang ) along with your knives . I want to around for a long time . MG2

PE Aqua Salt, Rock Salt, or Temperance is what I'd want

I would have to go with the Ed Schempp Rock Salt fixed blade.
If it had to be only a folder, I would take a full size Manix.

I'm waiting to see the upcoming Schemmp fixed blade and the bushcraft knife. Either way it will be a fixed blade.
I always have my paramil with me too, though. I mean really, who carries just one knife :)
Until then it is my swamprat howlingrat.
And my Marlin 1895XLR!

Try and avoid such a situation to start with. :)
If that would happen, it would have to be whichever model I had on my person at the time, probably a Military or Endura variant.
If I actually had a choice out of all the models, it would be a heavy-duty back lock like the Manix (out of production) or Chinook III (still in production) for folder or one of the Hossom collabs for a fixed blade, e.g. Forester or Woodlander.

It's a toss up for me between the Dayhiker and Woodlander. Both just big enough for chopping if need be. Take Good Care All and Be Safe Always.
God Bless :)

i forgot who posted this before to a similiar question but they said the forester so they could use the sheath as a paddle after the build a raft with the knife.:D :D
these days, a regular military in S30V goes clipped wherever i go (yes, even on my pijamas when i watch tv in the evening) so i guess it would be there if a survival situation pops out

Without question, the Forester.

If I'm choosing from the knives I own, I'd have to pick the Street Beat or Pacific Salt, according to the environment. Manix is close second.
If I have any Spyderco to choose from, I'd have to say either the Woodlander or a sharp, well-used Rock Salt, depending on the environment.

One of the fixed blades definately, but you never know so it maybe the folder clipped to the pants.:D. Take care all and God Bless. I hope you never have to find out the answer to this question.

I'd have my D2 military with me, so thats that. :D
If I could plan ahead, I'd probably also have some other knives and multitools (SAK, Busse).

I'd use my SE endura.
I'd probably go with the Rock Salt for a FB and folder would be Pacific Salt SE I have been really inpressed with the H-1 Steel.

If stranded what ever you have on hand is what you will have to survive with in this situation . Nothing will be perfect . Being prepared for the worse no matter where you are helps and again not always the answer . I carry in my truck alot of things that may get me through tough times that would not help somewhere else . Food for thought . MG2

Well put, brother. If I knew ahead of time, it would be ( of the knives I own ) the Manix.
- best wishes, Jazz.

Ditto. Of the knives I own, the Manix would be top choice. I don't own a fixed blade survival knife (yet).

Thanks for accepting my apology Spydieopath.... my statements to you were uncalled for and just plain wrong.....I also wish to apologize to Sal, Kristi and the forums for my improper conduct....I need to read the sticky again about "leaving shiny footsteps" .... It's clear that I forgot to do that earlier today; and for the next 48 hours I plan on keeping both feet firmly planted in my mouth :o :o :o

If it was a planned "stranded", and I had to choose a folder it would probably be the manix.
If it was unplanned, I'd probably have my D2 Millie with me.

I virtually never leave the house without a Rescue 93, Tasman Salt, and usually a relatively large folder - recently a para or a manix or zdp e4. I almost always carry a leatherman wave as well, so I would likely have all of those at my disposal. Granted, I don't think I'd especially need one for survival, considering that I do live in NNJ, where I'd have to work hard to find a place where there isn't a house/business within easy walking distance...
If I had to pick one knife - I'd go for a Manix for a folding knife, something like my leatherman Wave if I can have a multitool, or...I dunno what fixed blade...I own a Sog Seal Pup which is my best fixed blade IMO - not really a fixed blade guy. Whatever knife I'd have, I'd hope it would be a CE or SE blade.

The posts pointing out the fact that a real-life survival situation would probably leave you with the knife that you carry all the time make a very good point.
I carry a Tasman Salt all the time, and I'm going to be getting a Saver Salt soon. I think I would feel pretty prepared with those. ;)

...
To tag on to this thought - yes it is obviously true that you will only have with you what you have with you. It is not a deep insight or wisdom (but it is a common answer when these questions are raised on knife or survival forums, uh fora, or, whatever:rolleyes: . Leaving the answer at that, though, makes it seem like you (the general you, not anybody specifically) don't think about what you have with you and why.
I think the intent of the original question, though, was what WOULD you have with you if you made a conscious decision about this. And it WAS in the context of wilderness survival, which means to me you are thinking about a trip into the wilderness. Sometimes circumstances dictate what you have (such as on board a commercial airplane, in a courthouse, in school, etc), but otherwise maybe the message is to think about what you routinely carry, or, when you KNOW you are going for a walk in the woods, what ELSE instead or in addition to your EDC would you bring.
So, if you had a choice, and if you actually made a decision about it ...
btw, to the poster who liked his Busse ... I'm right there with you (although it is winter so I listed my swamprat HR with rubber handle and no exposed metal on the handle). But one thing the original question did specify, was your preferred Spydie. :D

:spyder: :spyder:  :spyder: :spyder: Well, I thought about this, and thought of...well, every Spyderco I own I have all the faith in the world in, and would gladly reliey on in a survival situation, and finally decided on a must; The Spyderco Assist is a must for me; The reason for choosing the Assist is due to the fact that it is the pinicle of rescue knives, and with it's LOUD:eek:  whistle, and Carbide tip(replacible). Now, if it had H1 blade steel, and componets(including wire clip). It is a ascential cutting tool in my survival kit, paired with a little H1 action, and one of my Ti-Atr's:cool:

For a folder I'd pick the Military. For a fixed blade, I'd pick either the Rock Salt or a Hossom.

Dunno 'bout a spyderco folder for as a primary survival knife.
But if prepared I certainly would have gone for a fixed blade instead.
And if caught in such a situation, unprepared; I sure would have wished for something like the Chinook folder on that day.
(Well, anything as large as an Al Mar SERE folder)
The main thing to look for is a firm grip that won't fly off your hands, and a great lock-up which won't fail under tremendous strain. And also some heft to some effective chopping but not so entirely heavy that it becomes a nagging pain.

I stick a Frost mora and firesteel with the sheath wrapped in snare wire and a few aqua pure tablets taped to it under the seat of my quad ,in a life jacket ,emergency winter kit etc. It is less than 20$ and has everything you really need for a couple days.

I would hope i had something better but if the worst happened this is not to bad.
They are also cheap enough to give away although it takes some skill to use.
