View Full Version : What's your favorite Non-Spydie to Carry?

So, I am just wondering what everyone's favorite Non-Spyderco knife to carry/use.

I'll start by showing you mine. I when I got into knife collecting I started out collecting USA made Schrades. I picked up a Schrade Lake and Walker and fell in love with it. It is the first knife I decided I "needed" back-ups of. I currently have 3 in Combo edge and one in Plain (the plain ones are hard to find). There is also a holy grail version in BG-42. It was designed by Michael Walker & Ron Lake. Its got a nice full hollow grind, and takes a good edge. It has a frame lock and an early version of the LAWKS system currently in use by CRKT. The pocket clip carries real low. I just like this knife for some reason.

Sadly, USA Schrade closed in 2004 and the name was purchased by someone who chose to move production to China. The knives will never be the same in my opinion. I think if they made more knives like this they might not have closed. :(

So what about you??? Show your non:spyder: favorite.

Only thing I carry when I'm not carrying my Spydies is the Sebenza. However, more often than not a Spydie accompanies it.

I've been carrying a Victorinox Adventurer for over 20 years as I need the can opener, tweezers and screwdriver regularly...(I didn't know about Spydies until recently..:( ) Recently I retired my old Adventurer and bought a Boy Scout...(Same knife only has a serrated blade (!) like a :spyder: !)...It was also almost $10.00 less...
Recently after being bit by a :spyder: , I have been carrying a D-2 Military too.. I fell like this covers it all...Then occasionally I carry the Harpy, and the D'Allara, and Delica, and the endura, and the ........Oh well ; You all know...(!)

Or the Kershawk quince Splinter.

I really love the narrow slim blades. Something Spyderco doesn't do a lot of, I think due to the neccesity for the spyderhole. Also part of the reason I lust after the original Jess Horn so much.

Recently, while carrying a Military or Gunting, I have carried my custom Lava by STR (Black and Tan G-10), backed up with an Emerson Combat Karambit folder, and a Boker MPT or Emerson Fixed Blade Karambit. Sometimes other bladed stuff gets carried as well:rolleyes:. Other than that, mostly I am carrying a Glock 21 with Surefire X200 light attached (it's winter and I can conceal the big stuff easier than in the summer:D)

Well, I always carry my D2 millie when out in "civilized" world, but when I go to the woods to mess around, I leave the millie at home and carry a FBM. It is honestly my favorite non-spydie to carry :D

Very rarely, I will carry a SAK of some sort--Farmer or Cybertool 29 or Huntsman.

EDIT: Well...FBM is sold, but now I have a CRK Large Sebenza. Guess that is my new non-spydie favorite :D

BM Lum 740 Dejavoo, usually for downtown or church as it is a low rider and not very noticible. It is a wicked smooth opener and VERY sharp w/ absolutely zero blade play, and it is one of 3-4 BM's that I like the looks of.

SAK on keychain.. that's about it. I just picked up a new Sogwinder I for 38 bucks, a hell of a deal, I will be carrying that loose in a back pocket (loose of course as there is no clip)

From May to November in 2007 I used to carry the CS Pro Lite. It is sturdy big knife and I love it, but it's discontinued so I switched to the G10 Cara Cara. This is my EDC from that, rotating with my Police SS PE.

When I feel that I will need something really big, I usually take my 5inch Vaquero. It got the Boye dent home made version, just for the safety...;)

Anyway there are my SAK, CRKT Bear Claw and one of my Mora knives in my backback. At least 2 of them any time, if I take my small backpack with me.

PS: Mora knives are unbelievably cheap and excellent Swedish fixblade knives. Lots of knives for their price, and in Sweden almost every people have at least one...

CS Pro Lite is the 2nd from top, the CS 5' Vaquero is the 3rd with the lanyard...

I'm a newbie with spydies and high-quality knives in general, really. I'm certainly loving my delica 4 and caly 3 (especially the caly 3) but am thinking of making a purchase (gasp) outside of the spydie realm. Just wondering what the hype is all about with the Boker's. I'm thinking that its between a subcom (depending on what I hear back) and a dejavoo.

Best,

I always carry my Gerber Emerson Alliance most of the time in its sheath (not a fan of a bunch of knives cluttering my pockets) in my left front pocket is a red Vic cadet just loose in there and either a Spydie Native PE or a Gerber AR 3.5 partially serrated, and in my back right pocket I usually have my fully serrated endura. The only exceptions are at work I will have just the Vic and a cheapie Kershaw Oso Sweet (people around where I work over exaggerate knives real bad, not to mention I dont want anyone taking my Gerber away) and at school (not really supposed to have knives at the academy but I always do, plus most of the instructors know me and are pretty cool about it) I'll carry the cheapie Kershaw as well because its not a big deal if it gets taken away

Orh! Thanx Jester!:o;)
2 years ago, my handwritting had deteriorated to the point where one day I couldn't read a 'post-it' note I'd left to myself. I made a concious effort to slow down and improve my handwritting, and started using broad nibbed calligraphy style fountain pens etc. and started writting snail mail letters to get the practise in.

Then one day in return I recieved from a near-forgotten aquaintance the recipe for a chocolate cake written on a single page in perfect Copperplate. I was hooked. The recipe page was framed as a peice of artwork. And I started trying copperplate. You can only get the nibs in 'dip-pens' because they're so fine, flexible and scratchy, but it aides to slow my writting down.

Well ... by far and away Spydies are my most collected and used ... but here are my other all-time favs ...

Top - Buck/Mayo TNT (titanium and s30v)
Counter Cloclwise - Left - Mcusta (damascus handle and blade)
Bradley Alias II (ti and s30v)
Benchmade Mini TiPika (ti and 8cr13mov) Great bang-for-buck.
Bradley Alias II (ti and Tom Devlin Damascus blade)

One other knife (not-shown) is a Kershaw/Williams OD-1 ... very underrated mid/low priced folder.

It's usually my clipped ones that get rotated. For the last little while it's been a BM Presidio Ultra - both the small one and the larger one. Larger one is clipped to my back pocket. I think the Presidio is one of my favorites. BM710D2 is right in there for my BM stuff, but a little large for most things I do. When I'm gardening or doing reno stuff, larger on gets switched out to my SE Altantic Salt. SOG Aegis was there for a while. Depends on when I rummage thru my accumulation what strikes my fancy at the time:-)

Why would I carry anything non-Spyderco?

Actually I carry a BM32 (and pretty frequently, I may add:o) simply because unfortunately and for my deepest regret Spyderco still has to come with a comparable thing. :(

The main reason is that if I open myself up to other knives, there are way too many to get, so Im sticking primarily to Spyderco. I'm currently without Spydies right now. I sold all my remaining ones to buy one of my grail knives. I got a Large Regular Sebenza, and yes it is as good as they all say. I was actually doubtful, but except for the issue of having a thumbstud I think it is pretty much the perfect knife. I will likely get a Para 2 and the Balance is pretty sweet as well, so I'm not done with Spydies. One of my other non-spydie EDC's is a Benchmade 555 MiniGrip with Wilkins pale green G-10 scales and a STR lowrider clip.

The one non Spyderco that i really really loved was a Buck Rush. It was a little on the heavy side and was assisted open but of all the assisted open knives i've played with, this one had the most logical safety lock i've seen and worked fantastic. I lost it at a job and eventually i plan on buying another one. It really was a great knife. If i could get it in VG-10 and with a FRN or G10 handle it would really give my Delica a run for its money for EDC.

Leatherman Wave with no close second.

I had a Wave Ti i think it was called, with the 154CM blade and it was super nice but it was really thick and heavy for pocket carry. If they'd make the whole skeleton out of titanium or do something to make it a lot lighter i'd be more inclined to carry one as my primary EDC. I just can't stand carrying anything in a belt pouch.

Boker Pry-mate

The name Pry Mate is derived from the staggeringly thick 7mm blade with awesome strength and cutting abilities. Designed by Danish knifemaker Jesper Voxnaes it is capable of some heavy work. It has a black micarta handle with deep thumb grooves making tough work very much easier. The N690BO stainless steel blade gives excellent edge retention. It is supplied with a kydex sheath and tek lock. It is available in two different sizes.

SOG Tomcat in a belt sheath. No pocket clip. A bit heavy but a very very sturdy knife. SOG brags about the lock type which is good but to be honest I've never had a lock of any type fail on me. I know it happens just not to me yet. When opening this knife I push the blade with the thumb stud and it GLIDES open and locks without constant contact by my thumb. It is NOT an assisted opener. When closing it I can hold the knife horizontal, release the lock and the blade just falls pointing straight down. There is absolutely no play in the joint when opening, closing and when locked open. I have never seen a folder with better performance as far as blade play. VG-10 blade.

I carry a Stretch most of the time instead of the Tomcat because of the ZDP-189 blade. I have 3 Spyderco knives that meet all my work and play needs but I truely do love that Tomcat. The first half of the blade from the handle has a very slight recurve shape that I like also.

Good point, spyderdog.

I can only speak for myself but I think a lot of people might be in the same boat as me.

I love knives but I really don't use them very much. I just don't really have the need to cut things very often. I can sometimes go 3 or 4 months without even touching up the edge on my EDC knives. And usually when I do need to cut something it's something like string or shrinkwrap or packing tape etc.

I recently tried to get into wood carving with a pocket knife (whittling) just so I could use my knives more often but I wasn't any good at it so I gave it up.

I usually carry two knives. One Spydie or Byrd knife and a slipjoint of some kind.

Lately this 2005 Schatt & Morgan Railsplitter keeps ending up in my pocket.

I always carry my Benchmade Model 51 Balisong in my front left pocket. I don't actually use it to cut much, but it's a great way to pass time.

The only non-spydie I carry is the Gerber fast draw. It's not super sharp but we will see if I can't do something about that when I get my Sharpmaker in the mail.

I would still say it's a Chris Reeve, but I just picked up a 3" Hinderer XM-18, so things could very well change:)

Probably an SAK Alox Cadet. Actually, that tends to get most pocket time out of all my knives.

My favorite none Spyderco to care is the CRKT M16-13Z E.R. Orange Zytel Knife. Lightweight and opens easy, but I still prefer my Endura!

Is Malice4you on this forum?
He rarely wanders and rambles on AirsoftGiforums...
Malice, if you read this, it's me, ASFTW *hint hint*
If not, malice is a huge spydie fanatic. I'll post up some of HIS collection ( not mine ) on here.. He's known for his knife porn. He takes the craziest, but most awesome pictures of knives.

Back to the topic:
My non spydie I carry the most would have to be my SOG Aegis... I love the blade shape on that thing. Wish it came out in like a 154cm instead of AUS 8, but I still love it.

I recently became a fan of the Kershaw Leek. I like the slim, non-pocket-hogging profile.

Boker Trance or Hyper.

Basically anything CLB puts together fights for my pocket :). Shame we haven't seen more collabs.

Folder: Para-1 - Non-Spydie: MicroTech Makora II, OTF Auto.

Fixed: Busse SH-E (Steel Heart-Ergo), Busse BJ (Busse Old School Series {BOSS} Jack - get your mind out of the gutter!) :p:D.

I have no fixed :spyder:'s.

EDIT: I forgot about my Fallkniven A2, fixed, that has seen a lot of use! I used to carry and use an SMF, Strider pretty often too, but that one is gone now. In all honesty, my Busse SH-E hasn't seen much work nor has my Makora II, but those two are the ones that I carry if I don't have a Spydie on me, usually a Para-1 or 2 or my Chinook II, CE (which has seen a bit of use), which is pretty much never!

Here's a tip:

In order to post pictures that show up as images rather than post attatchments, us the tags around the URL of the image you want to post. Example:

[IMG]www.UrlOfYourImage.com/

In order to use this method, you have to upload your photos to a photo hosting site such as Flickr, PhotoBucket, ImageShack, or Picasa (my personal choice). Once uploaded, the photo hosting site generates a URL that links to your photo so you can easily share it.

So in order to post the picture located at this (Picasa) URL: http://lh3.ggpht.com/_O9q8X121WxA/TCkByoOb3fI/AAAAAAAAAKY/5rOi42aAT4Y/s800/IMG_0041.JPG

I write this in my post:

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_O9q8X121WxA/TCkByoOb3fI/AAAAAAAAAKY/5rOi42aAT4Y/s800/IMG_0041.JPG

And it looks like this when I post it:
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_O9q8X121WxA/TCkByoOb3fI/AAAAAAAAAKY/5rOi42aAT4Y/s800/IMG_0041.JPG

Also, I find that the "Preview Post" button is very helpful in determining if you've done this correctly, so you don't end up with a bunch of posts with broken images.

Hope that helps! :)

I'm liking this one so much it's now my primary EDC (and it's been a long time since I carried any non-spyderco as primary). It's light and the lines are very graceful, just a very good looking knife altogether. May have to spring for the custom version if I ever have the moolah.

Caly 3.5 is coming thou and I'll see which one wins.

'All paths lead back to the Spyderhole' as I read on the forum by Brian :D
After 17 years of buying all kinds of folders and fixed-blades I finally chose for a Spyderco. I think I do not have to explain why ;) For a fixed blade I have two Fallknivens; an F1 and an A2, both in convex laminated VG10 in my own custom made leather sheaths. The blade in the middle is a fulltang A1 with black micarta grips I made for someone else.

This has become my favorite NON-SPYDIE EDC. I was lucky enough to have purchased 4 Lone Wolf Knives before the take over.

Still carrying the G-10 E4, but this has had secondary attention lately. A Queen Bone handle Jack from 1945-1948. Derlin Jack before that is from 1925-1945. (Pen knife is just along for the ride...:D)
