hi! im new around here...i just bought my first spyderco (its not here yet). i got a plain edged merlin. i bought it to carry as a backup for my cold steel voyager. anybody got any advise on using a merlin in a defensive role? since this is my first post i might as well express a concern thats been on my mind a long while. why is it so hard to find a plain edge civilian? i understand there was a limited run of them (around 300?)but for such a popular model why dont plain edge come as an option? anyway...nice to be here!

hi darkjedi458,
Welcome to the forum
don't know about using the merlin for self defense but i know one or two things about the civilian, it is serrated as standard witht he only plain edged versions i know of being 250 carbon fibre limited editions (25 of which are left handed) and an unknown number of aluminium ones which were made for a film company for cutting film while it is on the reel, don't take my word for it tho, i'm probably completely wrong... <img src="tongue.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle> There aren't very many because it is designed as a self defence weapoin and serrations make it better for the job it was designed to do.
