With the 'cobra hood' and intriging locking design, the Salsa looks like a sure winner. I was surfing the Web the other day and I saw it for the first time for sale on Shoptimax.com. I think it was going for $89.94 or so. This knife looks like it will gain popularity quickly. I was wondering though, is the 'Salsa' logo part of the handle scheme or is it just in the picture? Also, how does the Salsa compare to the Meerkat and Navigator? It looks like it could be around the same size. A sweet looking knife nontheless!

I think that the Salsa is about 25% larger than the Navigator/Meerkat. 2 7/16" blade vs 2 2/16"

Once I have the titanium model it will be interesting to see whether it steals the place of my Chinese folder as primary EDC. It may lose out by not having VG-10.

I am hoping that the aluminum version won't have that logo on the side -- it would be a deal killer for me.

On the pictures on shoptimax.com (see image) I see that there's something extra near the hole (1). Is that the 'cobra hood'?
And the other thing (2), is that the lock?
Also, I thought there would only be the colored ones, but Carlos, you are mentioning a Titanium and an aluminum version. Where's that info coming from? (just curious...)

From what I recall reading, the Salsa will be available in a variety of colors with Al scales. There will also be a more expensive version with Ti scales. Not sure if the Ti version will also come in a variety of colors.

As for 1), yes that would be the cobra hood. Not sure about 2).

Hi Ted,

Have a look at this pic. There is the aluminum handled version in three colours, and the titanium handled model (at bottom) with an integral lock (natural titanium colour only).

Actually this pic shows also what the "Salsa" logo on the aluminum scales actually looks like. It is a textural differance in the Almite, rather than printing.

#2 is the relief cut needed for the compression lock. After seeing how the lock works and fits together it makes sense.

Thanks Carlos.
I like the Ti version. Any ideas on the retail price?

Thanx Carlos. I might add a few info bits.

The Aluminum version is AUS-8 and the "Salsa" logo is on each of the aluminum versions.

The Titan version is ATS-34 and only comes in the one variation.

This is also a bit of a "test" pieces. We'll see how the models shake out in the future.

The "Cobra hood" is new. Reaction will be interesting.
The "wire clip" is new.
The "integral compression lock" is new.

This is also the first knife that Spyderco is making in Taiwan. We found a maker with the skill and the passion.

The model is a "Big" little knife. Ergonomic in most hands regardless of size.

Unfortunately, we blew it on the clip in that the knife has to be completely taken apart to change the clip over to the left hand version on the aluminum version. (The Titan version does not have a left hand mode due to the ingegral lock).

I will be an interesting model to watch.

I checked Shoptimax but they're showing the Salsa out-of-stock. Does anyone else have them?

Sal,
I love Spyderco deeply, and I have no real problem with taiwan - but in my case, i'm willing to pay a bit extra to have my knives made in the USA - something to consider.
There's nothing quite as heartwarming as turning over my Native to that "Made in Golden, Colorado".

I lubba da Spydies :)
