View Full Version : Gross motor openings
How many of you guys /gals practice two handed gross motor openings ... Problem with kinetic openings , is that fine motor skills turn to poop under stress . Then there is the issue of major grip changes that creep into some kinetic opening schemes .

:spyder: I train two handed gross motor openings, one out of five times I screw up one handed kinetic openings during MBC practice and I consider that too much. If I can screw up 20% of the time training with friends I shudder to think what'll happen in a bona fide defense situation ( I imagine I'd just chuck the knife across the street  )
Using a convulsive two handed gross motor opening I'm near 100% so that's what I train.
Of course I'm a one handed opening freak while lounging around my living room watching tv (alone, the wife has lost all of her considerable patience with my insessant knife clicking :o ) :spyder:

I find I fumble too much if I try using two hands...the single hand inertia opening works great for me....you must keep in mind the fact that if you are a victim of a violent attack you may need your hand or hands to fend off that attack to create space between yourself and opponent before you have the ability to even draw said knife...personally I want to have a free hand at all times just in case I need it.....IMHO a fixed blade is the quickest inertia opening or should I say non-opening knife one can use in a combative situation. If you are going to practice two handed openings with a folder and rely on that method, you better have that knife in your hand from the start of the confrontation or be able to create lots of space between you and your opponent....My thoughts are if you are able to create that much space between you and your opponent to make a two handed opening....you have enough space to just run away......creating even more space....Doc:D
Doc. I practice several openings . I also practice using the closed folder for impact as a precursor to edged operations . I also spend a great deal of time practicing covert indexing /opening , in the event of any pre attack foreplay .
I sometimes carry a FB , usually my Brock Street Weasel in a drawpoint sheath .

With the LLC, I try to combine both ways.
For me the problem with kinetic opening on the opponent is that you need to be too close to him, grab with the kinetic ramp a part of his body, (which he will probably won't have the courtesy to hold still) and drag the arm backwards, also risking to have it intercepted. Not to mention that I have no eperience with kinetic opening on live targets :o
It is to my understanding that Bram himself doesn't advise kinetic opening on the opponent's body as a regular drill.
In the same amount of time, I'd rather kick the opponent with the horn one or two times, than step back and open the knife with with a slap over the ramp. It goes lightning fast and it automatically puts you into a defensive stance.
With a Spyderco it's more simple, I always open it one handed (except for certain demonstration purposes). ;)
