My mentor in the Filipino Martial Arts, close personal friend, and brother (he basically adopted me into his family to teach me his family system of Kali) Apohan Tuhan Hasting Albo was killed in a car accident in Texas on Valentine's Day. I have been out of pocket for awhile (I flew out to Texas to attend the viewing and funeral and help with getting his affairs in order). His students and business partner in Texas are going to attempt to keep his two Kung Fu schools running. As for Albo Kali Silat, I am the only one left who knows the complete family system, though there are many others who have studied the art. I will continue the art, will assume a leadership/head of system role, and will do everything in my power to honor the wishes and memory of my friend and instructor. Hasting was a true man of honor and the world is a poorer place without him. For any here interested in Albo Kali Silat, Apohan Tuhan Albo and I had discussed creating some training DVDs and conducting some seminars. In his absence, I am going to make these things happen, though they will take some time. For those who sometimes view the Albo Kali Silat website, there will be a memorial section coming soon which will showcase some videos of Apohan Tuhan Albo, discuss some aspects of his life and teachings, and serve to honor his memory to the best of my ability.

Tragic. My prayers go out to you and his family and all that he has touched over the years of teaching and friendship.

May I ask where in Tx these two schools are located?

I'm very sorry to hear that bro.

I know it doesn't compare whatsoever, but the day I found out Ilustrisimo and Sonny Umpad passed away were some days which i was truly sad. I never met either of them, but they were people I wish I could have met and trained with.

It is said in my culture you don't need to know the person to share in this happiness or his sorrow. You will be in my prayers and am very glad to see you will be continuing the system and keeping the art alive.

take care
aj

Thanks for the support. I hope that his students in Texas can keep the Kung Fu schools open. There were many children studying there on "scholarship." They were allowed to train for free or for a very reduced fee (depending on family income), because Apohan Tuhan Hasting Albo remembered his roots and how he had been trained in Hawaii in a similar fashion. One of his schools in Texas was in a very economically depressed area and many kids who would never been able to afford training somewhere else were introduced to the martial arts. The community loved Hasting because of this and other similar contributions.

My Dear Tuhan,

The passing of Apohan Tuhan Albo still profoundly affects me; the impact of such a loss can be felt resounding far from the epicentre. :(

My condolences to his family, students, and especially to you, my brother.

Very respectfully yours...

:spyder: Sorry for your loss Tuhan. Are you going to preserve the family style classically or change it as you grow? :spyder:

Michael, that is a good question. The core of the art was defined by Apohan Tuhan Hasting Albo's grandfather. It is a Filipino Martial Art, and the FMA systems are known for adapting over time and incorporating ideas and techniques that are seen as beneficial. The best answer that I can give is that Albo Kali Silat is the most complete, in and of itself, art that I have studied and that I intend to preserve the art to the best of my ability. The concepts and core techniques will not change, because they don't need to and they need to be preserved. The "old style" combat focus has been removed from many arts, but it will be preserved in Albo Kali Silat. As you know, however, no two people move exactly the same way and everyone brings some baggage to any art. I cannot mimic Apohan Tuhan Albo, and to attempt to try would make the art "dead" rather than a living part of me. I am sure that, in some ways, I will leave my "stamp" on the art. I will continue to show my law enforcement students methods of dealing with firearms at close quarters, methods which originally were created to deal with knives and swords and which have been modified a bit for firearms. The core concept does not change, only a slight deviation of technique to express the core combat principle. Some things will, thus, change over time and improve, as is the nature of the FMA, but the core of the art will be preserved and the combat effectiveness will not be diminished.
