Your question is really way too broad. There's no "one size fits all" answer for something like that. However, at least here in New York State, and I would assume in many other locations as well, the answer would be that "in general" they would be fare no better and no worse than any other inmate of similar age, ethnicity, sexual orientation, physical condition, personality, and mental condition who had been convicted of a similar offense. All of those things have far greater bearing on how one inmate will be treated by their peers than their former occupation would.
There are some obvious exceptions. At the one extreme, a former CO incarcerated for beating an inmate to death or a white cop incarcerated for police brutality against blacks and/or hispanics would probably be treated worse than average by his fellow inmates. At the other, a CO whose actions endangered his fellow officers might find them less likely to intervene on his behalf or go out of their way to help him in any way. But those are the exceptions, not the norm.

A former correctional officer is either kept segregated to keep him alive, or sent out of state to do time where he is unknown. They can't put a former CO in regular population unless they want him tortured to death, or, if he's lucky, killed quickly.
It doesn't matter what your crime was, or your reputation as a CO was. You're dead if in regular population.
There may be some units that are deemed safe enough but these are rare indeed. None here in NC. California has some for ex gang leaders and guys like Charles manson who can't ever be put in a regular population in any prison.
Ex cops seem to do a bit better but still need special housing. Joe
Like The Mastiff said, they are segregated and kept alone. We've had our share of cops and CO's locked up in our prison, and they do their time in the Restricted Housing Unit.
Generally, they're shipped out of our institution fairly quickly, often to a lower-security facility.

+1 for segregation and shipping a LEO/CO in Washington state. I was a CO for a couple of years until the revolving door of inmates combined w/ "less than stupendous" management made me look for something less negative to spend my time doing on a daily basis. Thumbs up to those keeping at it....
