I started making a knife today. I worked on it for 2 and a half hours. I was working in my neighbor's shop since he has a VERY complete wood and metal shop. I had never used ANY of those tools before. He showed me how the grinders and belt sander/grinder worked and how to use them safely. For simplicity I had already drawn up plans for a fixed blade wharncliff. The only steel he had that was thin enough was a high speed steel planer blade. The total length is just under 9 in and the cutting edge is roughly 4.5 in. I am going to do a saber grind for the edge. In the time I spent to day I ground it to shape and smoothed it out. I also ground all of the sides perfectly smooth and square. I am thinking of using ebony hendles bomded on with jb weld. I wish I had a digital camera, my beighbor does. Hopefully I will be able to take pictures of it during the process and also the final product. I will kepp posting into this post as the project progresses. Any and all input is very welcome.

Ebony grips may look better with brass pins, which you can usually buy at any woodworker's supply/hardware store. Good Luck! <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>

Keepin' it real...real sharp, that is.

Samo, I am thinking about calling it &quot;smilodon&quot;. That is the scientific name of a saber tooth cat. I had not thought about a name for it until you asked. I will hopefully have some pictures on the forum later this afternoon.

Here is a pic for you. I forgot my dad had a digital camera, P.O.S.. So the pic is pretty bad but you get the idea.

A good start there Marauder2002.
I had to check your first post to see which way up it was, until then I thought it might have been an inverted wharncliff, in a similar way that Michael Janitch's Ronin is like an inverted tanto like design.
Have you given any thought to a finger guard ?

Keep us post.

I am going to deepen the index finger notch in the blade I am going here is a pic of the knife with the handle drawn on. The green line is where the grind is going to be. It will go from that line to the straight edge. The green line shows how much more I will probably grind out in order to deepen the finger choil. The gray spot is where I will make an index point, that point will be on both sides.

Very nice, especially for a first-timer. I'd leave it without a guard as the guard may interfere with the natural flow of the knife.

Any ideas on carry? Seems like a perfect type for half-tanned leather or Kydex.

Keepin' it real...real sharp, that is.

I don't like guards on knives unless it is a bowie. As far as a sheath I was thinking about setting an earth magnet on each side of the handle and the sending it in to Skunkworks and have them set a kydex rig fo horizontal carry in the small of the back and have correspondin magnets placed on the sheath.

I need a little help. My blade is M-2 I think it is definitely high speed steel. It came from a planer blade from a wood company. It being high speed steel it will rust VERY easy. I need some way to coat the blade. I would very much like titanium nitride coating or something similar. I have a friend that is a jeweler, is there anything I could have him plate it with?
