I have a friend (now a good friend) who owns a gun/outdoors/hunting shop. He had some stuff he was looking to get rid of that none of the guys that work in his shop wanted because it wasn't gun related. He offered to send it to me for gratis. No shipping or anything. Totally free.
I had no idea what it was. I was expecting maybe a cheap knife or something. What I didn't expect was what I got.
The first thing I pulled out was a big heavy red case that turned out to be a Gatco (Timberline) sharpening system (http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=GA10005). I don't have a sharpmaker and was looking to get one soon. So this is great for me, a free set of sharpening tools. It ain't a sharpmaker but it's also free. It looks pretty decent from what I could tell poking around in it. Have yet to try to use it.
The second thing, which is damn great is a Timberline Tactical Pen I had considered buying one of these as a cheaper alternative to one of Hinderer's pens. I ended up never getting one as I didn't really have the $70-80 or so they go for to spend on a pen.

It's nice to have good friends.

No thanks. It's still ugly, and as unpopular as careing about how things look is, I really do. It's very important to me.

Yeah, at maybe $40 or so I'd buy one. At $70-80 I wouldn't and didn't. I'm very happy to havebeen gifted with one. It's the best kind of gift, something you really love that you would never buy yourself.

It would be far more awesome if Timberline had left it "clean."
I actually like the pen, and would get one myself; if it wasn't for the markings on the pen. Undercover self-defense items don't work well if you advertise them as being undercover S.D. items.
Having worked as a High-end pen salesman a few years ago, I can tell you that there are a few pen models that would be great for S.D purposes.... The best example of which is $175.
And with those pens, you don't get the silly markings on the barrel or cap.

i agree with the consensus on the pen being to pricey, as for the sharkie, i remember reading that they dont allow those on airplanes either now (if they find it, that is).

There's only tiny text on the clip that marks it as "Timberline Tactical" and that's it. I was actually considering seeing if STR could make a clip for it, as it's just a simple screw on clip like on most pocket knives.

Many of the online stores where I've seen it sold at, actually advertise it as being ideal for self-defense. Or for smashing an attacker in the face.

Ah, I see what you mean now, not actual markings on the product?

Well, the word "Tactical" on the clip doesn't help.
The pen would be more useful for S.D. if the cap threaded onto the barrel, instead.

That I definitely agree with, but seeing as how I personally have no plans of using it for SD the pop off cap is more convenient.

I actually prefer it the way it is for SD use. The pen already has a rounded end for use as a striking and pressure point surface. If I was going to use this one in a real self defense situation, I would pop the cap off as soon as possible. This would then give me one end of the pen for striking/pain compliance, etc., and a pointy end for stabbing techniques. With proper technique and targeting you would be surprised how much penetration and damage can be caused by a normal pen.

I prefer my pens as hammer-fist enhancers. While it's still possible to break through the skin, I'm going for a design that gives me two, solid, striking surfaces on either end.
Here's one, 12 cents, primary printer. High viz yellow and ready to mark up those 2x4s!

I like your sense of humor. :D
But yellow really isn't my color. ;)
