I have just bought a police model (great knife)and the clip is backwards from the Edura I've been carring. Any suggestions on how the police model is to be carried?

Thanks Jay

Hi Jay,

Welcome to the Spyderco forum.

The Police is intended to be carried tip-down in your pocket -- some people prefer tip-down carry. You could also try IWB (in-waist-band) carry.

The Endura is tip-up, as all clipits should be. Maybe one day they'll fix the Police model.

The reason it is tip down, as all spydies heavy enough should be ;-) , is that it allows for you to spydie drop. Grip the blade by the whol and flick your wrist causing the handle to go down and it to lock open.

Spydie drop? I guess I'm really showing my ignorance. What is the Spydie drop?
I sure appreciate the info on how to carry the Police Model. Jay

I don't have a Police, but with other Spydies, like my Lum Folder, you grip the knife between your index finger and thumb where the Spydie-Hole is, with the tip up. You flick you hand forward, and the handle should open right up.

This works better with the larger Spydies, than the smaller ones. It also helps to have the knife broken in well.

If I'm wrong with my description, please, someone correct me (or correct me if I'm unclear here .

I much prefer tip-down orientation to tip-up.

The Police model is a dream to carry inside the waistband of the pants (IWB) just behind the right hipbone; as is a 1911 pistol. With this gun it's sometimes called "mexican carry".

Anyway, these knives fit great in there due to their slimness, and are ideal for "dropping" open as others have explained due to their tip-down orientation.

To try this: Take any Spydie, pinch the opening hole between thumb and forefinger with the tip of the blade pointing away from you and snap your wrist as if to throw the knife downwards. As mentioned; the heavier models like the Police will easily open to the locked position. Your hand ends up poitioned rather far forward on the handle, but it's great for precision cutting this way. Try it, it's wonderful.

Knives with the tip-down configuration just naturally present themselves perfectly for this technique upon drawing them.

I sure appreciate the good information your giving me. I didn't even think about holding onto the blade the way your describing, and clicking it open. I have been practicing and it works great. I can even do it with my Delica and Endura.
Thanks Jay

The Spydie drop is cool...just make sure you don't do it in front of any police officers because it MIGHT be thought of as a gravity knife.

There are a couple movies where I've seen the Spydie drop opening method, The Fan, starring Robert DeNiro (Spydie-dropping his Gerber E-Z-Out), and one of the villains attacking Uma Thurman in The Avengers with what looks like a G-10 Police.

Jay,

Glad to have the chance to talk about my favorite Spyderco knife.
