View Full Version : Rare Spydercos

I was thinking the other day, [yeah, I try not to <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>] about all the different Spyderco designs and special editions that have come and gone over the years. Designs like the Pink Crickets, CF Dragonflys, "Q"s, etc. I was just wondering if anyone would like to share what they thought would be a rare or hard to get Spyderco. I am currently trying to expand on any of the rare/discontinued designs, so this would be a great help to me as well as informational to the other Forumites. Thanks for your input! <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle><img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle><img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle><img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>

SpyderNut,
I'm not real sure how rare the "R" is, it's "Q" big brother with aluminum scales and plain (no Spyder on blade) laser cut blade w/ATS34. I bought one about a month ago from johnfjensen for 96.00. I also ordered a "Q" with H&K logo for 55.00, I haven't heard from them yet so they may be sold out. I guess I'm going to have to buy an H&K pistol to match the knife (DARN) <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>
I think the Blue Lum Chinese Folder is rare, newgraham.com 109.00
Maybe someone can comment on this knives and rarity?

Some of my "rare" Spydies (actually my "Preciouses"<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>
black-ti Military
Spyderco Forum Military
Bladeforums blue Native
gray Matriarch
white micarta baby Jess Horn
burgundy micarta Jess Horn
blue and green aluminum Centofantes
micarta Goddard
CF Dragonfly
2 screw Worker
tuffram Cricket
almite Walker
You might look for anything in micarta or carbon fiber or colors other than black, or any Q or R.
Oh yeah I almost forgot this one I just received from a forum member over at BF.

Chinook-Good list. Is that image an FRN BlackHawk? I have the G-10 blackHawk and Renegades. Definately add those to the rare/discontinued list. How about the PE laddy Bugs in colors at Blade Art? Also, the Baby Goddard and the hard to find Wegner hunters? Hmmm...so many good ones bit the dust
Nice collection there Chinook.
I'm moving more to the collection side now, and have way too many I want to track down <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>

Sharp1...
Nope, its aluminum. I emailed him to make sure before buying it. And it is mentioned in the Spyderco Story...
"Early versions of the Blackhawk had checkered 6061-T6 aluminum handles, butt G10 was soon adopted, and all Renegades have been of G10."
Its in excellent condition and he let it go very reasonably. ><g>

I forgot one more model, the Peter Herbst Ti. I guess the plain edge is more rare than the 60/40 of my #520. I'm not sure if I'm ever going to "use" this knife! I hate having something like that and not useing it.

Good question SpyderNut! I recall someone purchasing a stag handled Jess Horn last year. That must be a hard model to find. Another knife that I wish I had purchased is the Walker with blue anodizing and ti handles. I haven't seen that in the secondary market.
Edit: Oops, I think the Walker had blue anodized liners and carbon fiber scales.

I just got my Herbst Ti #671 60/40 (thanks to a tip from Hoosierdaddy). I read somewhere that only about 300 of these hit the street - that's gotta be near the top of the list of rare Spydies.
To comment on the Herbst Ti, it's one awesome knife! It has the smoothest action I have ever seen and the blue accents on the Ti scales are really cool. I won't be carrying this one though - I'll stick with the newer Aluminum one for EDC.

BrianEberhart,
Glad to hear you finally got your Ti. Herbst! I was curious how does it feel when opening compared to your Almite Herbst? I've opened the Almite Herbst a few times but not many.

Hoosierdaddy ? There is definitely a big difference in the feel of the action of the two knives, the Ti is definitely smoother. The Almite version seems to have a ball detent that keeps the blade closed and also provides a bit of a stop at about 3/4 open. It also has a much more pronounced ?click? when the lock engages.
When I get some time, I?ll try and write up a comparison of the two versions and post it in a new thread. There are a surprising number of differences. Both are totally awesome though.

B/E,
Thanks for commenting, I suspected the Ti. model was smoother. It is incredibly smooth, does anyone from S.F.O. or anyone at all know is there a Delron/Teflon bushing in there or does it have a bearing or hows it work? I don't want to take it apart to find out. Also if you have a "Triple Beam" scale, what's the weight difference?
BTW... if you do have a "Triple Beam" scale what the heck are you doing with one of those <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle> ?

Well guys,
There's nothing rarer than those prototypes that never made it to production.. Its in Poppa & Momma Spyder's keepsake. It'll be great to see those rarities of there is ever a Spyderco Museum in Spyderland.. <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>

recoil - WOW "Ground Zero" Rescue!! Can you give any details about this knife? I heard that Sal and Company donated some to the NYPD/FDNY personnel, but no details as to if any customization was done to those knives. (This was an awesome thing for Spyderco to do by the way).

Brian,
Sal & Company showed how much of a class act they really are by stepping up and acting after 9/11. The 200 orange & 100 black rescue models sent to the area were unmodified except for the blade engraving which reads " In Memory of Americas Finest 09/11/01" Sal presented me with one (thanks again Joyce) at the NY show in November due to my involvement during the crisis. For obvious reasons, It's my favorite Spydie.

ruxton,
The Ying-Yang design was done by Sante-Fe Stoneworks using the aluminum Cricket and available few years back. The white stone is mother of pearl and the black is jet.
pic attached- I hope!
If not I'll email you one.

I Don't recall the price from when it was a regular item, but I recently contacted Santa-Fe and they would make one up like the original for around $120, if you supply the aluminum cricket.
