I am looking for some advice hopefully from someone who has/is served/ing in the armed forces. I have a buddy in the reserves shipping over to Iraq in a little over a month. He won't be in combat per se- he's expecting to work with Iraqi contractors in some capacity. I thought it would be nice to make him a care package.

The question is what should I include? I was thinking a Swiss Army Knife, maybe a Spydie if I can get some other friends to chip in. What else may come in handy that I could include? If there are any military folks who could give me some ideas I'd appreciate it. Thanks

John Conner, who has been there and done that, has some ideas:

In addition, I would suggest some wet wipes and some firearms cleaning/maintenance gear (including patches)--that stuff is in pretty scarce supply over there right now. Video games, paperbacks, and anything to fill the down time are popular. Batteries are good--for whatever devices (flashlights, etc.) he might bring along. A good Surefire is a nice thing to have over there.
