Does anyone here acutally own one? I am considering the purchase of one but it will cost me about 3 high end Spydies to afford it...

I have the older version on which all the accessories are screwed on using an Allen wrench, and would rate it a high quality machine.
Mine has the variomatic switch though.
I used to sell these machines to interior builders and cabinet makers in a previous job and bought one for myself using the staff discount.
The motor is extremely well balanced and can run under load for hours continuously without getting more than handwarm, something you will appreciate when sanding smaller surfaces a lot.
Also it's sawing capabilities are really special, not in actual meters but in precision.
You can cut neatly right into the surface of a panel without predrilling, it produces much less sawdust than a jigsaw because of the unset teeth of the sawblade and the cut it makes has about the same width as the sawblade itself.
With the use of the offset depth control wheel you can saw into existing panelling without cutting through underlying powercables or wooden supports.
The vibrating knives a very handy to remove old carpets and thick layers of old paint.
A friend of mine used the machine fitted with the high speed steel circular saw to cut a severely rusted portion out of the bodywork of his car with no problems, and i have used the same to cut a piece of copper pipe under a sink where there was no room for another method.
All in all it's a very high quality product that doesn't come cheap, but if you have work for a professional machine that can sand, saw and cut very well for prolonged periods on end without overheating than this could be the one for you.
Buy a version that comes with as many accessories as possible because they are expensive if bought one at a time later on.

Buy one, you won't regret it. Fein makes a very high quality machine, a bit expensive, but it is worth it. This machine in particular comes in very handy with al sorts of jobs. We use the diamond coated saw the most. Also the wood saw comes in very handy. I would at laest get the Select set.

I did it. Thanks for the push I needed to take the plunge. I got the "Top" set, in part because of Kwakster's logic...those accessories can add up, so get them while they're a little cheaper in a package deal.
My wife was somewhat resistant to the purchase, however she spent a good portion of the day using it to sand door jambs, which is a good sign. (See how much I love my wife, that I let her use my brand new $400 tool. I will even let her drink my beer!)
I found I was using the MM quite a lot, too, particularly the triangular carbide grit blade, to smooth bumps in plaster so that trimwork would lie evenly on top of it. I also had a "flush saw" moment, when not even a handsaw would have done the trick; it would have either been hacking away with a chisel, or the MM flush saw. The flush saw was MUCH quicker and more professional looking. It's a very odd feel, the way you just push the blade into the work and it cuts.
I was surprised how many times I reached for it today. Thanks again for the encouragement, I needed it.
Why doesn't any other manufacturer put out a competitive product??? I mean, come on, let's admit it, it's just a big powerful vibrator with various accessories you can attach.
