hey guys what do you think of this instead of the foam?...i copied the design from someone on here, i can't remember who...sorry:(. the dowels are just fitted in. i was thinking of getting some spray adhesive and putting down some cloth first and then gluing the dowels in place. even if someday i fill all the drawers up i could just stack another one of these layers on top because the dowels are higher than the knives themselves. any thoughts?

Reminds me of the "Collectors problem of storage ..." thread (http://spyderco.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28769). Now tell me, why is your box a good deal bigger?

Looks nice to me, but I'd have to put down a layer of felt or at least some heavy canvas, something to cushion the little darlings. :D
i like the foam better, but maybe in black color, they look snug and secure
with the dowels, it looks like they are not secure and they will move around when the drawers are opened and closed, true ?

Nah NOT sure about this...........send me the drawer full of knives so that I can see it in daylight. ;)
I promise to send them back..........some time! :D
I agree, I think you need a green felt liner to the drawer floor.

The dowels look pretty cool. The foam looks like it'll keep the knives more secure.
What about dowels and foam? :D

genetics...the italian in me:D ...i couldn't remember whose idea i copied...it was between you or Wouter.....did you use the spray adehesive like i said?

they move a little with just the wood...with felt or whatever liner i put down over the wood i don't think they will shift much.

Personally I prefer the foam. The Spydies would be easier to grab and take out. With the dowels on the other hand they are definitely more secure. You just need to put some felt down. Or foam over the dowels.

Nice, I wish I had the talent to create something like that!
I do prefer the foam, but the dowel would work too - perhaps with a layer of felt as people have already mentioned.
My father used to have a antique glass top display table that he would put some of his antique Colt pistols in (back when you didn't need a safe that was more secure than Fort Knox!). It had green felt and looked really good (particularly with the factory nickle plated .33 with ivory handles :D ).
Sadly, at least for me, I have absolutely no talent in that regard. In fact, I'd even stuff up cutting the foam!!!
Nice job, either way though!

Foam or maybe velvet under the dowels. I would like something soft and protective under them.

Nice work Tony!
In priciple, I like the dowel system, but I think it does need to be coupled with "something" on the bottom of the drawers to prevent the kinves from rotating around the dowels when the drawers are opened and closed or the chest is moved. My suggestion for that would be the stuff that looks sort of like window screen material that was dipped in rubber which Walmart sells by the roll as anti-skid shelf liner. Comes in a few different colors,

Nope, only black felt, but it is a practical idea to fix the felt :)

Nice, I wish I had the talent to create something like that!
it was all the tools, not really talent...that took me maybe 15 minutes tops with the table saw and the drill...most of the time was spent laying out where to drill the holes....you should try it...well as long as you aren't accident prone with power tools that is:p
Nice work Tony!

actually i have a big roll of that stuff in black for my new tool chest...i'll try it and see what it looks like.

thanks Peter...for the answer and the idea i stole;)
foam +1
I think it's a good color btw.
doesn't take away from the knives.
Tony that's a nice collection you have there. I like the way you have them in the drawer too. The felt would add a lot of "bling'' to the wood. Make the knives stand out. Do you have a good lock on the drawer?;)

I love it much better than the foam. I also am going to do the same shortly for my Spydies.
I did see Peter1960 had done something like that. I want to do the same eventually. :)
Nice job bro! :)

Tony, I think the foam looks better, but the pegs are interchangeable. I say do whatever costs less, then spend more money on Spydies:D

the standard lock on tool boxes...it will keep somebody out for a little bit...just long enough for me to grab my beretta and his friends the hollow points:D.

LOL. :)
ok guys here is what i came up with...i tried the black sticky cabinet liner (it is pretty cheap at lowes...clicky (http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=90013-46478-91140&lpage=none)) but it looked like crap IMO because you could see the wood under it. i figured i would have to paint the wood black, then i wondered what it would look like with a contrasting color. I am in the basement..aka spydercave:p ...and there are a whole bunch of file holders in many different colors in the filing cabinet. i took a few pics if anybody likes it and wanted to see how i did it...it isn't hard and i think it looks pretty good. I used some packaging tape, it has a slight glare in the pics but it isn't noticeable unless you are really looking for it. my suggestions would be to cut the board at least 1/8" smaller on the top and side...maybe even 1/4" because after you fold the liner around the wood it is a PITA to get into the drawer. that and pull the liner taut(sp) as you are hammering the dowel down. also when you are folding over the liner you might need a staple gun, although i used tape again because i was too lazy to go to the garage. i think for the next one i am going to try yellow...i think that will look nice too. anyways here are the pics...if anybody needs any advice on doing it just ask. thanks again Peter for the idea!

You should spraypaint the pegs black or color-code 'em. That would be awesome.

Excellent display idea for an impressive collection, Tony. :D
Right now, I don't have enough Spydies to worry about how to display them (Only 16, ATM :p ). A Spyderpak is enough for me. ;)
