View Full Version : Choices for "Watch pocket" carry?
Jeff/1911
01-10-2002, 12:00 AM
This thread is an attempt to collect ideas about the choices that exist for Spyderco knives appropriate for comfortable, convenient carry in the "watch" pocket of jeans or similar pants. This would conceivably become my long term "anywhere" knife. It would usually be accompanied by another, larger Spyderco knife carried elsewhere for use with more serious business.
The Spyderco/Wegner Mouse seems to be highly regarded for this purpose; and will likely be my choice. Any others to consider?

Hmm,
Although I don't own a Mouse, yet, I'd venture to say that a Cricket or Dragonfly would work very well in it's place.

Too many choices. I've got the tuffram Cricket in there now. A mouse on the way and looking for a micarta Jester.

A lot of them will fit in a watch pocket, but I will stand up and say either the Mouse or the Toad(s). Why? Well those particular pint sized Spydies are just ultra solid and will do the work of much bigger knives. The other, smaller Spydercos, IMHO, are more suited for gentle-man/woman's (Hi Kahz) carry and light duty; such as crafts, attacking boxes and lighter duty carving. For example; If I had to skin and dress a Moose(and who hasn't been saddled with that task lately), the CF Dragonfly is not up to the job. But it sure is a cool blade no doubt. So go with the Mouse or Toad(s).
Viva El Raton!!!! On second thought Jeff: Naw-don't get a Mouse..they are much too small and way too sharp...

I would go with the mouse-hi end,or the dragonfly SS or FRN PE.

I figured that the Mouse was a higher-end design, and more heavy duty from the descriptions and appearance.
This kind of knife is exactly what I want. I prefer a lockback to liner lock (Mouse vs Toad) and the blade shape of the Mouse looks great; particularly in VG-10.
I really like the Dragonfly and the Cricket in their many forms, but will wait on one of these for awhile to save them as a knife that I can get as an "impulse buy" sometime in the future. These are stocked locally, so are usually available.
I'll be ordering a Mouse in the weeks to come. Is there anywhere else to consider as a supplier besides Bladeart?
Sharp1 - Thanks for the great Mouse pictures.
Cheers, Jeff.

Chinook,
What knife is the one along the left side of your posted picture?

I understand that this isn't the reply you're looking for, but I keep my EDC in my watch pocket (Calypso Jr and before that, a Delica). There's plenty of room, and I find it more comfortable (sitting etc) than carrying my knife clipped to my waistband, belt, or front pocket.

Hi Jeff, what's a "watch pocket"? Just kidding. None of my slacks or jeans have watch pockets so I can't tell for sure if my Executive can fit one of those fancy-shmancy pockets. I like the blade profile and handle of the Executive better than that of the Mouse. However, it might be hard to find the Executive in the aftermarket so I guess the Mouse or the Toad (which I like) are possible choices. I also like the almite Navigator; however, again, I don't know how much room you have in your watch pocket.
The woman speaks:
Mouse, Dragonfly, or maybe Cricket. I vote for the Rodent first for all the reasons that Sharp1 described. Hi Sharp1!!
Jeff, suppliers: Blade-Tech, A.G. Russell, Knifecenter (pricier).
You just NEED a Mouse.

I've found that my Meerkat carries just fine in my watch pockets. It stays right there and doesn't try to jump out....

First, a tip of the cap to Kahz for suggesting almost every knife I was thinking!
Second, one more knife I came up with on hindsight, the Ladybug. It's small, highly useful, and inexpensive enough to replace should it grow legs.
Keepin' it real...real sharp, that is.

_That_ pocket is called a "watch pocket"? I always thought of it as the change pocket, since I typically stick my change in there. Lately, I've been mostly sticking my Meerkat in there. Fits very well. The Mouse also fits very well there, but I find the clip on the Mouse to be a bit less forgiving than the wire-clip on the Meerkat. The Mouse's clip can scratch/abrade anything that goes in or comes out of the main pocket. At least, that's my experience with these two knives in the "watch pocket".

Thank you all for your counsel, and the benefit of your experience. I am not sure where the name "watch pocket" came from, but I figured was a commonly understood description.
I already have a Ladybug, which resides on my keychain so I'd like something different. I hadn't considered the Meerkat, Navigator or Executive.
I have tried my Delica and Calypso Jr. in there and for me, they're way too big. They dig into my leg and beltline when I sit.
I think I still like the looks and idea of the Mouse best so I think that's what I should buy. I want to get a knife I can keep for a long time. Besides, Kahz told me to. Thanks Kahz, for the additional sources.
Cheers, Jef/1911.

Watch Pocket-According to Webster's 9th New Collegiate Dictionary, a watch pocket is defined as:
" n (1837)a small pocket just below the front waistband of men's trousers" (sorry Kahz-Webster was a Pig).
Back then, the commonly worn watch was the "Pocket Watch" and was the norm, hence the watch pockets in the pants and then the Levi's of today. You know what a pocket watch looks like-right? They have the round case with the flip-up lid; and are attached to the belt with a gold fob (chain). The watch pocket kept the ornate watch cases from being fouled and scratched by those huge silver dollars and $20.00 Gold pieces they used to carry I guess; and those huge 30/30 bullets too.
Today pocket watches are a novalty and I am guessing less commonly found in the pocket than a Spyderco Knife by now. Therefore, I move that that from this day forward, we call this pocket a the "Spydie Pocket".
Interestingly, that same dictionary also defines the term "Pocket Mouse", although it is not a reference to Jeff's newest knife to be!
Lastly, to carry on in the name of honor & tradition, should we ask Sal to design and make us some gold chain fobs for the Spydie Pocket Mice"? I think so....What do you think folks?
Sharp1,
It that case, I would be delighted to start a ladies' fashion statement. Just make sure I can find a "watch pocket slack" manufacturer that makes 'em wide enough to fit my hips, LOL!
Personally, I love pocket watches, makes an ordinary man a real gentleman. A pocket Mouse sounds just as appealing.

Sharp1,
Thanks for the definition. I'm glad to know that, as I wasn't sure if it was still an accurate name for that lil' pocket.
Kahz, Thanks again for the references on Mouse availability. I have looked to the sites you mentioned, and there is quite a spread in price, isn't there? Guess I'll order from the home of Wegner itself though, assuming they'll agree to ship waaaaaaaay up here to the frozen north.

I think www.bladeart.com also sells them.
The Mouse is a great knife. My favorite knife in this category. I was going to say my favorite in this class but the Mouse is in a class of its own.

Dennis,
Well, it is a Tim Wegner design after all. Man is that guy good at knives.
The fact that you too recommend this knife is quite significant to me. Your comments played a big part in my purchase of the large Wegner, and I am still amazed at the brilliance of it's design. You know how to pick em'!

I wish I could handle a Mouse...I haven't even seen one yet at a gun show that I can think of. That has the possibility of being my favorite "mini" knife...SS handles, VG-10 blade, Tim Wegner's blade shape.
Some of the Spydies I already own that fit the watch pocket are of course, the Dragonfly, Meerkat, etc., though they probably would not carry in that little pocket as well as a Mouse. I Want One!!!
(thanks a lot, guys, now I once again am interested in this little powerhouse).

Jeff/1911 and J Smith - the Walker pictured is an Almite Walker. I know, because I sold that one to Chinook
There were no Micarta Walkers produced.

I just went to my local knife shop today, in hopes of finding a Mouse in their stock. I didn't realize that it was a proprietary product of Wegners and only available a few places.
Anyway, while I was there, I looked at and handled a Cricket for the first time. Wow! What a beautiful little knife. I like the action of the lock, the feel, the "S" blade shape...but why hasn't the blade steel changed to VG-10?
So I was thinking; perhaps I should buy one of these first to see if really use a "watch pocket" knife that much. Then, if so I would go ahead and order a Mouse.
I know I'm going to love the Mouse, and I know that I will decide it's worth the money once I see it for myself; after all it IS a Wegner. I am just having trouble committing that much money at this time.
You see, I already have a G-10 Police, plain edge on special order at the moment from my local shop. I thought I should get it while I still could so I am.
Hmmmmm. What to do...

Jeff,
The Mouse is a GREAT knife. VG-10 is probably my favorite steel. I agree that the Wegner designs are some of the best out there. I have a Wegner, a Wegner jr. and a Mouse, and they are on my top ten list.If I had to choose only one knife (heaven forbid!) the Mouse would be one of the choices.

Bruceter,
Well, since I also own a Wegner and a Wegner Jr. I guess I'd better add the Mouse to complete the family. I also think that the Wegner designs are extremely good. My large Wegner is an amazing knife and one of my favorites.

I only use to carry two Spydies at a time... RFP & LFP but now with my new blue Lum Chinese I carry that in the W/P location!
Ooh I forgot... I've carried my Ladybug on my keychain for the last three years... add one to those figures.

I rotate a Mouse, Navigator and Kershaw Chive in the watch pocket of my Levi's.
For the money, the Navigator is the best knife. It's out cuts the others on most materials I've tried. It's like a kitchen knife that fits in your palm. Very under rated knife.
The Mouse. as most people have said, is fantastic and very sturdy. I guess it would outperform the Navigator in BIG tasks - like jointing a Moose LOL, where there might be a lot of twisting of the blade.
The Chive is just fun. Much smaller than the others, very solid lockup. Possibly the best lock of the three. Fairly cheap too.
My Lil' Temperance has been know to ride around in the watch pocket of my Levis. W/ out the clip it slids in and out quickly. It also rides perfectly in the small change pocket that is in the right hand pocket of some Dockers. The widtth of the Lil' Temperance is perfect for the Dockers.

Just a cautionary tale, I carry my cricket in the watch pocket of my Levi's but it has an occasional habit of jumping out. It seems to be when I'm wearing a jacket with a fitted (elastic drawcord) hem, which lifts it. More secure in the "proper" pocket.

The Cool,
I think that I'd better take a look at the Navigator, before ordering a Mouse since I can get one of those at my local shop. It's the grayish silver colored (Almite?) one with a plain edge.
Thanks for the tip.
Jeff/1911.
Woudnt the "Toad" be the ideal Spyderco for this type of carry?

Good observation, Bell.
The Toad [IMHO], would be a swift 'pocket watch carry' knife. AND, it can be had for $47 over at Knifesite.com. [If I'm not mistaken. ] So, you could have the best of both worlds, the S/S handles of the Mouse, and the diversity of the Navigator.
Good luck on your endeavor!
