View Full Version : Which knife do you carry around anti-knife people

Which knife do you carry around anti-knife people. I like it to be a folder under 2.5 inches and have it concealed. Does spyderco have any 2 inch folders in vg-10 flat grind?
In the land of knives, Spyderco is king.
The nearest I can think of would be the SS Dragonfly.
2.25", flat ground and ATS-55, which is almost as good as VG-10.
Next choice woild be the Navigator. It's a shade over 2", the new model is VG-10, but it is hollow ground.
It's got so bad where I work my next purchase is a Cricket. Surely not even the most belligerent can think that the Cricket looks dangerous. But I most definately will NOT be getting a pink one
"Walk softly, but carry a big stick."
I sympathize with your question. I'm in a college environment and don't dare carry anything with a tactical look to it. I like the cricket but am concerned about carrying it due to its reverse-S curve. I wonder whether SpyderCo would consider a variation of it with a different blade style. I'd buy it in a second, Sal...
Rookie,
The Mouse has a blade of about 2" and it's VG-10, but hollow grind.

I carry and use what 'I' choose to carry around all people, which could range from a Military or Starmate to an xtra lrg. Voyager. Fixed blade depending on occation.

Honestly.....I carry my CF Civilians on a regular basis no matter where I go (except airports, courthouses, etc.), usually accompanied by my Meerkat.
I do not let politically correct views affect the knives I carry. It also keeps the fruits, nuts and vegans away. rico
First I try to not be around anti-knife people. But, when all else fails, I carry my Native with Blue Inlays or my Meerkat. The Native is so good looking people don't mind and the Meerkat is just so unasuming.

keen, what about getting a Meerkat. It is just like the cricket but with a normal(non reverse s blade). The phantom lock is cool.

I typically carry my Meerkat and something larger on me, usually my green Lum Chinese Folder. If I'm with other knife people and need to use a knife, I'll use my Lum Chinese, otherwise, I'll use the Meerkat. It's usually small enough not to set off any "Spydie-sense".

I carry the BIGGEST freakin' knife I have!
Just kidding. I really don't. Being a 'college kid', I normally carry something that is conservative enough so that I'm not 'turning heads' when I walk by someone. My normal carrying knives in such a situation would be a Spydercard and a Ladybug. [Sometimes I do compromise and carry my Calypso, but not normally. ] I would like to get a CF Dragonfly, **Looking in Kahz's direction** [hehe] for when I would have to carry something small enough so that I don't create a ruckus.
I like mid-sized knives anyway.
~Spydernut
Spydernut,
Heard ya, I did... *evil look*
So, what's your major anyway?
Kahz, enjoying her CF Dragonfly

Ah ha! It worked! I knew the 'CF' topic would bring Kahz out of hiding!
**Noticing the 'Evil Look'of Kahz**
Uh oh. I'd better stop, before I get maimed!
On a slightly more serious note:
Kahz, I am majoring in Business, as of the present. I am thinking of changing my major to Mechanical Engineering, as I have a real desire to work as an engineer for a company that my dad used to work for. I don't know yet as to when I'll make "The Change", but I am thinking about maybe next semester. This is my freshman year, so it has been a real eye-opener since high school.
I really enjoy college life. I even count it kind of fun! [At times.] Which reminds me, I have a test next Thursday...
[ Its on Marketing and Products, etc. so it souldn't be too bad. ]
Wow! Look at that run on! Sorry if I 'wrote' your eyes out.
Ever in search of the elusive CF 'fly,
~Spydernut
SpyderNut,
You just know how to make me come out of my SpyderLurking, don't you???
Well, I could drive south to Indiana just to show off my CF Dragonfly to some Hoosier I happen to SpyderKnow. Oh, forget it, I am blind and I don't do highways at night. Dream on...
Good luck in your test! Marketing is a piece of cake, take this from a marketing major... I am changing careers, btw.
Sorry, Rookie, this tends to happen in this forum, back to your question.

anti knife people dont concern me. i carry just about any knife i please outside of my cold steel oss. that 8 inch blade is a little much. most of the time i stick to a 4 inch voyager tanto...every once in awhile i carry a safekeeper 2 which is as much a no no in oklahoma as a bowie....depends on where im going if i carry that one. and of course my merlin rides shotgun with whichever knife i feel like carrying that day! oddly enough iv gotten stranger looks from the merlin then the push dagger...go figure.

With my carry, it depends on if I'm working at the time. If I'm working, anything goes! Typically, (read Right Now) I wear a sheathed Buck 450 and an Endura next to each other. One great work knife and one which I just enjoy to carry, in one place!
As for college, I go small and preferably natural grips. Case Russlock, my old Scout knife, Old Timer stockman, and knives in that vein work well. My Ladybug also finds its way in my pocket quite often, like an old dog searching for a blanket.
Keepin' it real...real sharp, that is.

The Spyderco model I carry, which creates the least adverse reaction in the uninitiated, is my Jess Horn Lightweight.

All the bravado that has been posted here so far knife
owners / users should remeber that in sheer numbers
there are more non knife folk's than knife folk's.
While no one wnats to pander to the non knife folk's
holding a "in you face" attitude does more harm than
good. I carry whatever I need for the day with little
or no fanfare. Since I am around non knife folk's
14 to 16 hours daily my behavior is important as
a representive of my hobby. No one has ever
expressed any concern about even the biggest
blade I carry because it is never displayed or
used in a threating manner.
So I'd guess it's not so much what you carry
it's how you behave when you use it.
It's all really all about public perception.

I usually put a civilian in my pocket when I know non knife people are to be present. But I can be very evil from time to time. So I usually put a l.w. calypso p.e. in the other pocket just because.
I like the "civy" cause from time to time I get the occasinal "better not bring a knife to a gunfight " ~~person that doesn't think or know I'm wearing my glock also. :'
Happiness is being a SPYDERCO collector.
Thanks for the idea Rookie! I did purchase a Meerkat, and do carry it everywhere but at school. I would still like to get a smaller, sturdy knife with a closed length around 2.75". The ladybug would be fine, but I don't like combo-edges. Something the size of a cricket would be great except for the reverse S edge. I wonder whether anything this size might be forthcoming in stainless steel?
No doubt this pursuit of an "innocent blade" sounds silly, but I do stand at the other end of a lectern, and have ticked off more than my share of slackers with the rigor of my course requirements. Thus, I must be careful about giving the angry and active an "edge up" on me.
Yeah, 'we are in the minority', but I know what that is like on other levels as well, and folding over for anyone who has a problem with me is not the answer. Some of us carry for work, I do not. Some of us carry as a hobby, I do not. I carry primarily for self preservation, and if I can open a box for someone, great. For me it's a lifestyle choice. More on the level of religious practice than hobby. Many religious people openly carry small symbols or articles associated with their practices on thier person daily, I'm doing the same. They practice their 'way' in their daily lives, so do I. They set aside time during the week/day specifically for dedicated worship or practice of their 'way', so do I(perhaps more). It is 'they' who need to learn tolerance. Without the freedom to bear arms, all other civilian freedoms are in jeopardy.
Take care,
Ken
My EDC is one of the new VG10 Enduras...However the near 4 inch blade can be somewhat intimidating to the everyday "Joe" on the street...I carry a Ladybug in my pocket and am soon purchasing a Cricket when I want something not so large...
My Jess Horn lwt and the excellent Micarta'd Mini Dyad don't seem to cause any reaction.

It depends upon the mood I am in. If I am kinda annoyed I will carry my military and calypso jr just to scare/annoy sheeple. Otherwise I almost always have my spydercard with me. I would also carry my ss dragonfly and se cricket. The meerkat has a nice gadget factor and the salsa series looks fairly friendly.

My Mom is one of these "sheeple" you speak of
So basically I have learned to not worry about carrying knives around sheeple, so I carry whatever I please

Civilian, of course. :D
Seriously, I carry two knives. One is the Leatherman Wave, which is socially acceptable since it is obviously a handy-dandy tool rather than a scary looking weapon. The other knive I carry varies, depending on my mood, but can be a Harpy, a Benchmade Griptilian 550, an Endura, or the Gunting. Needless to say, those knives stay hidden. Of those four, I'd say the Griptilian is the least scary looking, because even though the blade is 3.5" - huge by non-knifer standards, it looks like a "normal" blade.

To ALL :
I would have to say my C 29BK "Cricket".
If ANYBODY gets offended by it's 1 1/2"

What do I carry? Military, plus Calypso Jr. Lt, Navigator, micarta Dyad Jr., AFCK, and/or REKAT Sifu.
What do I use? Usually the CJL, or the Mini Dyad.
If I feel like I'm in the middle of a sheeple herd, then I use the SAK Manager. They're better off not knowing about the Military or the Sifu.

I carry the Meerkat. It is "cute" but has the soul of a scalpel.

In my job I pretty much carry what I want, regardless of who is around. Now, if I actually take out and use a knife, I will pull out my little Swiss Army Classic or sometimes the Soldier. I always carry multiple knives anyway, and tend to save my main one-hander-type knives for real cutting jobs not likely to occur in my work (as a captioner for deaf students).
Jim
Considering that my least offensive knife is my Calypso Jr PE, and that I just got it today, I think it's safe to say that either I'm using my knives in a socially acceptable manner (i.e. discreetly), or there just aren't many vociferous anti-knife people down here in Texas. People at the dining hall where I earn my spending money have asked to see my "shank", and more often than not have ended up cutting themselves even after a warning (can you imagine a guy testing the sharpness of an edge by running his finger along the blade instead of across it? Wonder if Darwin had some of these guys on his list?). I've "Spydie-opened" my Native in front of customers to open a bag or box, and never have I gotten anything more than "cool knife, man". My neighbor is now expressing his desire to get a knife, and I gave him some suggestions for a good one that wouldn't turn heads (Dragonfly, Cricket, or Ladybug, all in PE versions). Guess I'm just lucky to be able to spread the Spyder virus to so many willing hosts.
