View Full Version : A common error: Is the Spyderco 'bug' a 'tick'?

Ever pull out your Spydie and have someone exclaim: "Oh! Is that a tick logo on the pocket clip?". Sheesh! In my mind I'm thinking: "NO, that's NOT a tick!!" Of course, I answer very nicely that it is the company's 'icon' that they put on all their knives and that it is a cool logo to have. Anyway, it kinda gets under my skin when I hear the term 'tick' when someone sees a Spyderco. Who knows, maybe some day they will be as an avid spydernut as I am.

Funny you said that,

My wife, also noticed the Spydie logo resembled a tick. I strongly re-butted and insisted it was a spider, er, Spyder.

She said it was a funny looking spider but if it made me feel better, she'd refer to it as a spider and not a tick. Gee, I think I missed something here...

Anyway, can someone from the Spydercrew share the history of the Spyderco logo with us forumites?

From what I understand, the "bug" is a Rocky Mountain Tick.
A side note: How many ticks did God manufacture with 8 legs?!

Ryan- aside from the 16 legged ones outside Homer Simpson's Nuclear plant, none!

I think the bug is obviously designed as an abstraction, with clear Spyder undertones.

Keepin' it real...real sharp, that is.

Doing a quick search online (All Hail Google!), it seems that adult ticks have 8 legs (whereas immature ticks have 6).

FYI: Ticks are arachnids.

Samo,

Yes, I completely agree. It's the cutest/coolest logo I have seen. Aside from my love of arachnids, of course...

Thanx for the info guys....I never realized that ticks do have 8 legs. I guess you learn something everyday.

So...

The "bug" is technically a member of the arachnid family but it's not a spider, it's a Rocky Mountain tick, right?

So, *humbly looking around for wife* my wife's right? This is a logo of a tick not a spider? Tell me it isn't so...

I just had to post something on this topic. I'm V-1's better half. I have to agree that the spider does look like a tick. Has anyone ever purchased one of the spyderco logo hats? No offense to anyone because I am a huge Spyderco lover, but that "spider" does look a heck of a lot like a tick. When you compare the body size to the size of the legs, it resembles a tick. If you had a smaller body and longer legs, then it would look more like a spider I think. But, just my thoughts. As an aside, has anyone yet got one of the new spyderco Salsa knives? I wanted to get some opinions on how they carry. My fav. spyderco still is the Wenger, Jr. I have two of those...one still new in box that I have never touched and a serial numbered one that I carry everywhere. Have a great weekend everyone!

Mrs. V-1,

Scroll down a little ways and find a thread titled "Not so hot Salsa" started by Rico. The date was 1-9-02. There is also "Salsa and Chips anyone" by SpyderNut on 1-1-02. This might give you a little insight on the Salsa.

It's a "cute" spyder. When we first began making Clipits in '81, the models had a sterile look about them. All stainless, Opening hole, clip and teeth were pretty tactical, even though the word hadn't been coined yet for knives.

The speed of access was unusual and the cutting power of the serrations intimidating, .......so we needed a "cute" logo. One of the crew made up the original logo, we made a few modifications and wnt with it.

It IS cute! and now has international recognition. I recently received a sharpmaker and "met" Sal. Great video-class, professional. It appears to me that the little triangle chingadero on the nose of the bug is an end view of a spydie sharpening stone.

Chingadero?

So, how does that word function in that context? I may be misunderstanding.

Hi Kahz,
Well, Kahz chingadero is like a cochinada or in english a thingamajig or a whatchamacallit. I just dont know what to call the little triangle at the tip of the "bug" but dont you think it looks like the end view of the sharpmaker? Un abrazo muy fuerte de este rumbo.

Hola Bell y gracias. Si, el chingadero es el abrazo.

When we created the logo, we were making sharpeners only (1980). We didn't begin with knives until 1981, first Clipit.

Bell and Sal,

LOL! Ok, so I guess I did not misunderstand... the "whatchamacallit" is also a good translation. "Chingar" is one of Mexican's favorite verbs, and it can have many, many connotations, both positive and negative.

Well, the "tick" continues to be cute.

Bell,

Geez, yes, I am sorry too. Bulls lost, Bears lost... I guess I will just have to celebrate anyway.

All due to a defensive mistake in the second half... oh, well... Cheers anyway!
