Since not everyone perticipates on both Spyderco fora, I 've decided to post this question here as well:
What do you think about a lower-priced, lightweight Police model with FRN (Zytel/Grivory) handles. This is not being suggested as a replacement for the steel-handled classic Police model, but an additional variation. Same blade steel (VG-10) and hollow-grind. Keep in mind that it would take up additional SKU slots that might otherwise be used for a totally new knife design.
I understand that Spyderco has been debating the possibility of an FRN Police for some time, and they'd like to hear some of your opinions as well.
If you don't like the idea, then why not?
If you do like the idea, would you:
1. Want coloured FRN and/or black? (I was thinking a dark police blue.)
2. Want a Calypso Jr. Lwt. style reversible clip (tip-down), or an Endura style reversible clip (tip-up).
3. Any other refinements/changes to the Police pattern?
You can see a quick and dirty mock-up image of a blue FRN Police here:
View Attachment...
Would that not be an Endura or at least very close?

Hi Jeff,
Do you feel that the ss Endura = the ss Police?

I think it's a wonderful idea. There is quite a difference to me between the Endura line and the Police models. The blade style (love that swedge and flat top edge), blade length, clip design, handle design...
I think there may be a lot of people who would love to own a Police model but have not been able to justify the price of the current models.
I think it would be a seller. So, my suggestions are:
Coloured FRN; Dark Blue would be great!
The clip setup like the Calypso and many others; with three screw instead of "the stud" (a' la Endura) but perhaps tip up would be best after all.
Considering that the handle would be lighter than the current ones, and so likely wouldn't Spyder-drop too well... However if it's like my Delica, it should "thumb-flick" open quite easily. Perhaps tip-up is best after all. Didn't think I would ever say that about a Police model.

Yes, I'd like to see a FRN model and blue would fine.
PLEASE NO MORE BLACK!!
While I would much prefer a flat gind I understand that
for the police the hollow grind sells better. Think it's got
something to do with visuals of the knife.
Anyway, The FRN would put this really good knife in more
hands due to a lower price. I'd say go for it........

No.
I don't care for 6 cylinder "muscle" cars, and that's what this feels like to me. I understand that the Police is expensive, consider it an "aspirational" model. I wouldn't bring the (arguable) flagship down to a price point.
The stainless Police is Spyderco, don't hang the name on anything less.

Sounds interesting Carlos!
Will it be significantly lower in price? Whatabout grip? Does it feature a volcano grip? I love the idea of a flat-ground FRN police.. Dark blue seems like and excellent choice for color dude!

tortoise stated that the SS Police IS the police that most people think
of as a Spyderco police knife. I think he's right.
If you look at this way then that opens the door for a "New" model of the
police as the "Police II". A FRN Aus-8 flat grind price point utility knife
for the masses. A really good way for for more folk's to buy a Hi performance
knife and becoms a "Spydernut". We all know that like potato chips "Ya can't
eat (own) just one"!!!

I stated this on the other forum but thought I would post here as well.
Probably not.
I know that the Endura is not the Police, but a FRN Police would not significantly fill a different role than the Endura.
I would say go for it if it had certain features that set it apart:
Navy Blue FRN
Calypso jr style clip
Compression lock!
These would set it apart from the Endura.
