The Pen and pencil discussin on EDC forums (http://edcforums.com/index.php?board=32.0) might be a good place to start.

What type pen?
Production or custom?
Miltec
Timberline
Surefire
Benchmade
All are making very nice ones.
I picked up a BM pen at Blade and I must say it is very nice,I think I would have gotten the Surefire over it if it had been out.
Tom Anderson makes a great custom pen but it is around 450.00
BM is about to have theirs in SS but I heard the retail is going to be 180.00

Love the Rotring 600.I have two but got them before the price went this high. You might get on cheaper by going through the bidding.

I am a big fan of the Rotrings, especially their older stuff which you can get from eBay (search for Rotring 600 -newton). THeir older stuff is better designed IMHO and possibly one of the more solid ones around whilst having a unique hexagonal barrel design. ..... or ...it might just be the architect in me :D

I've recently had a quick look at the BM tactical pen as well as the Timberline one, and the Hinderer pen. Hinderer one looks great except for the price :(

SAILOR by far is the best production and custom pen manufacturing line. It is a Japanese fountain pen brand, the writing nib (which is crafted by jewelers) has received the greatest and highest praise since its conception and is regarded as one of the finest writing instruments in the world.

Mont Blanc and Dunhill (made by Faber Castell) are also renowned companies. However, if I were to have it my way, I would get a Sailor.

Surefire is coming out with their own ballpoint pen on June 16th. It will of course be made of anodized aluminum in black, with a SS tip, clip and some near the point end. Knarled-up 'ball' on the top they say makes a great emergency glass-breaker, but alas, no LED light inside. Retails for $125. Will be interesting to see the response when it hits the market.

The SureFire standards are pretty high, so I expect the SF pen to be up there with the other SF stuff.

That's what Cher said the last time she was in San Francisco.:D

More on topic, Parker pens are well made and pretty cheap. And Waterman make some great pens for under $100 that look a lot more expensive. I've had a Waterman for years that is still going strong.

I've had some good experiences with Cross. The last one I owned was years ago and was an all SS model. Classic Century. I believe OfficeMax and Staples may carry a few select models.:)

Let us know what you decide. And it's a great gift by the way. Whatever you get, I'm sure the receiver will be totally impressed and honored. It's not everyday someone gives you a nice pen.:)
