View Full Version : Knives, watches, torches and guns.

One thing that strikes me as I weave my way through various forums for each on the web, is how many of us seem to be into all four, knives, watches, torches and guns. Anyone care to theorize as to what is going on here? is there a valid connection between the four? Does anyone care to add anything else to the four?
(I'd add music/hi-fi but I don't see a great deal of evidence that the many share that passion)

For me watches, pens, flashlights, knives, guns, serious HiFi, scooters, cars, flyrods and tackle, leather jackets, westernboots, tools, and a lot more have it over make-up, lipstick, strolers, slimfit diets, sweet wine, hairdo's, handbags, powderboxes, and such.
Celebrate manliness! and "will you please get the Laredo out in front. I'm gonna take it for a spin...."
Enough said.

we like the better things in life not just the crap you can buy at the mega mart
we also like to find out about what works and what does not and read/write reviews
we are after all the "cool kids" now :)

David,
that's not strictly true, although it does apply to certain types of guns that our American friends have much easier access to.;)

Its because that is what defines us. What we are willing to lug around everyday without hesitation. Through trial and error, everyone of us has searched and are still searching to upgrade or refine our hard work for these commodities.

Knives, watches, pens, lights etc... are all 'gentleman's tools'. In days of old these 'personal effects' were a way of letting the world know that you're an educated and sophisticated man....some things don't change!:D ;)

Its simply what defines us.
Specialy knives, and it has something to do with having style, for sheer precision and quality.

My theory is that they can all be considered "Shiny" and there's a bit of Magpie (Crow/Raven whatever) in all of us.

I'm actually not into guns, I don't hunt so there is no need for me to own one really. I do have a 10M Russian air target pistol that I occasionally destroy cans with, and I wouldn't mind having a flintlock musket to play around with and go BANG. :) I love my flashlights, but so far don't have any really expensive ones. I love my Fossil Titanium watch (I can only wear Titanium), but I don't own any others because the Fossil is going on 5 years old and I believe it is indestructable as hell (all the pins in the bracelet have been replaced and it's on the second face). I like knives since I've carried on off and on since I was 4 years old. I don't leave home without one. The whole Spyderco thing is pretty good, I like some of their knives, but after buying my top four (I'm on three now) I'm likely going to just use them and not get anymore. I mean who needs 20 knives at a time? Maybe a bad question to ask you guys. :D

LOL, I remember seeing a picture of Daywalker somewhere with like 20 knives clipped on him!!!
I am afflicted by the same illness as the rest of you, knives, flashlights, I love Luminox watches. So far no guns...
My initial thought was "Torches" ?????? Then I realized that I have four different types of torches. I really only use them for work. I didn't know that there was a forum for them. The cell phone has a clock.

Thanks for the reminder, my birthdays have caught up with my guns, so I need to buy a couple more. ;)
Luckily, I haven't been bitten too hard by the flashlight bug. Probably because the nearest Surefire dealer is over a hundred miles away.
Watches...I have a few, but I wear my Seiko Automatic 200m dive watch all the time.
Knives...so what if I could carry a different knife every day for a year and a half without repeating? Everyone should be able to.
After all, these things are the building blocks of civilization. :D

yes to all the above, however I haven't mastered the art of throwing myself at the ground and *missing*, yet**
**Douglas Adams' definition of flying; "There is an art to flying, or rather a knack. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. Clearly, it is this second part, the missing, that provides the difficulties."

I think Wouter said it best. I agree.
I also like Watches, Pens, Knives, and Firearms. I don't own any firearms (yet), but I have studied them and shot them. I would love to eventually get a Glock 17 or 21 and also an H&K .45. ;)
I used to have a really nice black Waterman pen but I gave it to my sister. She still has it and uses it.
I also have a Surefire 6P and love it.

Me too, Knives, Shooting (not so easy to have a gun here..) Watches, HiFi and Cars. I don't know why, but I just like them. One thing for sure, I always like high end gear and equipment.

I don't know. I am into knives, sure, but I have about five I actually carry and use, then about six that just lie here, waiting to get traded, gifted or so. I have a cheap Casio digitals that had been through hell and back with me and they keep on ticking... well, not really, but you get the idea :D. I write with local equivalent of Bic pen. And I have some flashlights, but no more than I really need (one I carry in a jacket, one for my car and Photon in my pants), and although I toyed with the idea of getting something really nice and dependable, like Surefire or Fenix, I just can't justify that kind of money when a 10 dollars el cheapo tac-light works just fine.
I am into weapons, like airguns, slings, crossbows, swords and such, but no gun - yet. That's going to change in a few years for sure.
Just thinking I would throw my odd personality into the mix :D

I think it's just the thought that you're prepared for any dangerous situation, really. I don't much care for keeping time, however. I run on my own extended form of Pierce time.
Besides, I can't wear watches. My grandfather once bought me a timex with a velcro band, back when those were popular, and I destroyed it 5 times before he stopped replacing it. Got caught in a bike chain/spokes twice, slammed it on the bottom of the pool once... I don't really remember what happened the other two times. But in short, I break things that I wear on my wrist.

That's a personal choice. And as such, it's perfectly fine. I also understand that the culture in Canada is very different than the one in America.
But, gun ownership in and of itself has nothing to do with hunting. Personal protection, and protection of one's family is the main reason for gun ownership. Still, I will admit that the American media has done an excellent job of promoting the myth that hunting is the only legit reason for owning a gun.

Well, I'm happy to sse I'm not alone :D
As many of you, I'm into knives (only 2 spydies for now, but about 15~20 other knives), watches (don't have enough cash to get my Holy Grails, but it will come) an torches, I own a Nitecore defender infinity and a Surefire 6P as EDC, and 4 or 5 others.
I don't own guns and don't want to. I live in France, and as you may know, we have a totally different point of view than in America, regarding guns :D

Well Guy's to sum it up I think it's just pour passion:spyder: and all these things that fits together with our knives fits together like a puzzle. And for some reason If I leave home without my knives, watch or torch I seriously feel like a incomplete puzzle:confused:
