View Full Version : The wonders of sandpaper

I went to the hardware store today to buy som ultra fine sandpaper for my ss rookie. I was amazing, I have almost a mirror finish handle. It worked great on clip(it had gotton ground into the cemet in a basketball game). I got the 600 grit, maybe I should have gotton a higher grit. But it worked just fine. It was only $.89 and it restored my whole knife. Anybody that has a scratched SS handle should get some.
P.S. Make sure to go with the grain when using the sandpaper.

Thanks for the feedback about this, Rookie. I had read previously about how to sand the s/s handles to restore the finish but I've been reluctant to try it. 600 grit sounds quite coarse, but if it worked...

I use silicon carbide wet/dry sandpaper to refinish blades also. Using it wet, starting with 320, then 600 and finishing with 1500 grit can give you a great polished finish. I brought back an old and well used Buck Special to a "better than new" finish. I'm sure the 1500 grit paper would give equally good results on SS handles
You may have luck getting the very fine grit wet/dry paper at an auto supply store with the body refinishing materials.

Next time try a green scotch-brite pad they really work wonders on ss handles. P.S. we sell replacment clips also. 1 800 828 1925 x 101.

I was thinking the same thing. 600 does sounds a bit too coarse.
Rookie, I imagine that you did not use a lot of pressure when sanding? Glad to hear it worked for you.

I used very little pressure on it. 600 is a little coarse but that was the highest they had at the store. Maybe I will get some 1500 and try that.

Rookie,
Automotive paint suppliers have this sort of paper, 1500 or even finer grits. Check your yellow pages.

What about the other way around? Has anybody used sandpaper to roughen the ss handle to develop a less slippery grip?

I was at my friends house and the worse thing happened. HE DROPPED MY SS ROOKIE ON THE CONCRETE I couldn't beleive it. Now I have two dents in the handle. This was the same day that I had restored my knife. Is there anything I can do to get the dents out. I have already tried sanding and that doesn't work.

Sorry to hear about your Rookie, Rookie.
I don't believe there is any hope on getting rid of those dents. Just call them battle scars and be done with it. I recall someone saying that dents and scratches give your Spydie character. Kinda like the wrinkles on Sean Connery.
I believe the saying goes:
You can pick your friends; you can pick your nose; Just don't go around picking your fiend's nose.
Best wishes in recouping from those dents.

Rookie, Try using fine model files to round out the dents then sand.
You can find the files at Sears or a hobby shop. They are fine and small
just the ticket to repairs of this damage. Easy does it and you'll be fine.

Thanks for the advice, the dents are too deep to file out so I will just give up. They will be "battle scars".

I think fiend sounds much more interesting.
Battle scars just aren't the Same if you are not the one to put them there.
