View Full Version : Advice on the 204 Sharpmaker

I have long searched for a decent knife sharpening system. In my long quest, I have found just one sharpener that will do a knife justice. This sharpener is great for PE knives, but it just doesn't work on SE toys. My brother is not YET hooked on Spyderco knives, and I hope that by getting a Sharpmaker I can hopefully sway him over...[I know once the 'bug' bites, it will be all over....]
So what do you "Sharpmaker" fans say? Sould I go and get one??

I just received my sharpmaker and video and the set is fantastic. I watched the video and began a rampage to sharpen everything in the house, garage, my mother-in-laws. Wow. Give me something to sharpen.

Eh, I really like the sharpmaker. Only thing is getting to know whether your knife is 40 deg, 30 or any other angle. Putting a completely new edge angle on is somewhat time-consuming.
BTW, could someone tell an ignorant what PE and SE stands for? I haven´t got a clue (yes, I´m semi-new on the forums, at least this).

PE= Plain Edge
SE= Serrated Edge

I'm curious as to why SpyderNut doesn't think the 204 Sharpmaker would work so well with SE blades.

If I read him right, it sounds like SpyderNut doesn't have a Sharpmaker. I don't either and I've been wondering if I should. How about anybody's thoughts?

Whooheee!
Nomaded,
Sorry I didn't make myself more clear on that one, but I don't have the Sharpmaker....yet. I have heard that it is one of the only sharpeners out there that will do the little serrations on a blade. I can feel the urge to splurge coming on....
Thank you everyone for your honest input on the Sharpmaker. I will order one pronto!
Case In Point:
My brother walked in my room today and wanted me to sharpen his Buck Oddesey for him.
Oh how I wished that I'd had the 204! I did sharpen it, but as his knife is in 50/50 design I was only able to do the PE part.

Now I'm ready......

I got it! Oh yess!
I checked out a few different places before I finally decided to go with newgraham.com.
They had the Sharpmaker for $42.57 vs. everyone else's $45 to $47. [ I think that Shoptimax was the highest at $68. ] I just can't wait to get it....
I'll let you know what my bro thinks when it arrives. I know that the virus should take effect immediately....
Thanks again for the input!

The 204 Sharpmaker is awesome. I got one when I bought my first Spydie, a SS Native. Unfortunately, I paid full price (on both), but I don't regret that too much. No matter what the cost the 204 is a fine, fine tool.
Just one thing to remember, don't get butterfingers when you're sharpening, in the kitchen, when the kitchen has ceramic tile flooring. I need to get a new fine-grit stick now.

From a few quick searches, it looks like newgraham.com has the lowest price on the 204 Sharpmaker. As SpyderNut says, it seems that everyone else is around $45.

I was at the Firing Range shooting my latest aquisition (Beretta 96 Centurion) and they had a 204 for 45.00 so I bought it. I started sharpening every kitchen knife in sight. It works awesome! The nice thing is I didn't have to pay extra for shipping! When I felt comfortable with it I sharpened my P/E Native (GIN 1), wow is it sharp!!!

Hi Judge and Jaxon! Welcome to Spyderland!
As for the 204, buy one. Now. I have never owned a sharpener which can sharpen anything, all equally well. It's pricey, but it's definitely worth every penny. (or pence, pfennig, mark, euro, etc.)
Kahz- Way to go with 500 posts! Any idea what Spydie you're going to get for the occasion? Maybe a Chinese Folder <waves to Clay, muttering in the back >
Keepin' it real...real sharp, that is.

The Sharpmaker may seem expensive, but it is a tool that is well worth its cost. Just like the Spydie knives... it's the finest quality. It's documentation is excellent and you get to see Sal on the video. I would advise anyone to buy one. It's a small price to protect the investment you make in your knives.

I recently rec the Sharpmaker (NewGraham) ((BTW they send bandages with the purchase)) no extra charge. I am not sure my knives are used to 40 degress so initially it takes a few (many) more strokes. I have not been able to slash any ropes in a single stroke or cut paper dolls (is this trick paper?) like Sal but I an still learning.
