Does anyone like this steel? I have tried may steels (Aus-8, 154cm, ATS34, VG-10), but this one just does not cut it for me. I want a Police, but the 55 makes me weary of buying it. What are your views?

Hi Beach Bum,

Welcome to the Spyderco Forum.

The Police has been switched to VG-10 now.

Welcome to the forums Beach Bum. I have the smaller police version(Rookie) and I love it. ATS-55 is a good steel that will take a razor edge. It does however, need constent sharping(fairly easy to sharpen) if you use it for rough work. This is a good steel but not the best. If you get ATS-55, be sure to get a knife that has a flat grind. It is SO much easier to sharpen and the edge you get from it is awesome.

Beach Bum, will you be getting(if at all) a new or an old police model?

I have an ATS-55 Endura and love it. I haven't had any stain/rust isssues like some I've read about. And I live in a coastal community with a lot of salt in the air. I have no problems getting and keeping a good edge on it.

Rookie, I have not decided yet, but are there any more changes to the new Police besides the change to VG-10?

PS. I only have one knife in ATS-55- the cricket. As I was sharpening the knife, the steel folded a little. It seemed soft like aus-8, but I know that can't be true as 55 has 1.00 carbon and aus-8 has about .75. Maybe it was simply just the thinness of the hollow ground blade?

Just bought SS Police in ATS-55 and I love it. I take back my older comments about 55.

Jeez it doesn't take you long to make up your mind about a steel, does it? I usually have to use a knife for a few weeks, getting it dull through work and then re-sharpening it and getting it dull again before I feel confident enough to pronounce judgement. How did you come to your conclusion?
