I had recently heard that you can go out at night with a UV, with a UV light source a flashlight of some kind. and caterpillars and other bugs eating your plans will glow phosphorescenty. has anybody else heard of this. if so any suggestions on a good fairly inexpensive UV light set up.

I have heard this as well. I know for sure that it works on some of our local bugs like scorpions. I don't know if it works on other kinds of bugs. You can get these cheap blacklight type flashlights here at any hardware store for less than $5, so you should be able to find a "bug light" for cheap. Have fun.
It works on some crawlers, I can't say exactly which ones though... I know for a fact it works on the yellow scorpions and makes them glow very brightly. When I was in the army this was how we used to search for them before we got into sleeping bags when "camping" out.
If you're sleeping out in the desert, another useful tip is to use your socks to cover seal your boots shut, scorpions and other nasty crawlers like to hide there which could mean a nasty surprise for you in the morning. Just take the sock, pot it around the boot opening, twist and push inside and you'll be good to go :)

Heh, heh...... Helps to keep the sand out too. I learned the same "trick" from an Egyptian solider during a Brightstar operation in 1981. I taught this to my troops during the buildup to the first Gulf War.
Arab or Israeli, fighting effectively in the desert has its own special ways, and you folks are pretty darned good at it.
