Hi Mr. Janich--

What blade edge type (plain, serrated, combo) do you prefer in a knife used for personal protection?

Vin- I think he went to Canada for a stint or so. I know the answer though. Heehee

He covered that in level 1 & 2. which was a good crowd last weekend.

I seem to recall Mr Janich posting on the forums that he prefers the combo edge.

Thanks for the (lack of) info, Spyderholio.
Er, I mean Spyderholic. Just can't resist gloating over us common-folk, can ya, bud? (aww, I'm just kiddin'--you're my hero & always will be!)

Mr. Blonde: I hope you're right. Combo edge (depending on the proportion) is my own preference for general utility and it'd be nice if one edge type is optimal for both everyday and emergency/protective applications.

Either way, I don't think this topic is as high on the list as other considerations (e.g., grip quality, lock strength, user-training, etc.), but I've gotten the question asked of me recently & thought I'd pass it on to the resident expert(s).

Thanks,
Vince

The edge I prefer is the one I have with me. Seriously though, I like combo edges. Super sharp and great for starting tough cuts. I don't really carry a protection knife though.

Some laws permit, what honor dose not.

Dear Mr. V:

Spyderholic is right -- if I had to carry only one, it would be a combo edge. With a well executed cut, the serrated portion will bite deeply and go through thick clothing, paving the way for the plain edge to cut cleanly without snagging.

Many thanks to Spyderholic for filling in for me during my absence. I really appreciate the support.

Stay safe,

Mike
