Calypso Jr. - micarta vs. FRN lightweight

Hi fellow Spyderfolks,



I own a micarta handled Calypso Jr, w/ a plain edge and I wonder what the difference is between this and the FRN model? I know they differ in their handle (scale) material and VG-10 blade steel vs. AUS-8 for the micarta version. Aside from these differences however, I recall hearing that their shape or feel were subtly different. Does anyone care to comment on this?



The reason I ask is that while I like the looks and richness of my Calypso Jr. micarta, I don't end up carrying it that much. I'm not sure why, but I wonder if I might prefer the lightweight version or at least end up using it more w/ it's VG-10 blade...



Now is the time to buy one, as they are still available and at very good prices it seems. I don't think I can lose by picking one up. After all, I just finished telling another forumite recently how the one he was considering was a deal at twice the price. Better listen to my own words.

Hi Jeff,
I've just ordered a Micarta Calypso Jr SE, last of the very few it seems, it looks like the Micarta PE ones at Mr Jensen's shoppe have all gone.

I'm a Micarta/G10 fan - I don't like FRN as it feels and looks cheap. However I'll get the FRN model for the VG-10 steel...and to fill a space in my Spyderpac.

You can't go wrong with a Calypso Jr. FRN <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle> for EDC while you can still get one.

Sharp1 - Yes I have the large Micarta Calypso as well, in plain edge. It's a neat knife alright. Yup, I guess I'd better get an FRN Calypso Jr. as a user.
