View Full Version : Does anyone else here have issues actually forcing yourself to use your Spydies?

I know most of the time I preach "use 'em...... no collecting just use 'em".

Recently however (say in the last 3-4 months) I've been wanting to freaking baby every Spydie (and every other knife I own). It's like I sometimes just want to keep them all pristine and clean. I sometimes don't wanna go out and scratch a knife or something. I'm finding this strange behavior. I start looking through my collection (small collection) and realize that I switch knives so many times that I don't have any that have that "really used" look. That sorta sucks.

So I'm trying real hard to get back to my "use 'em" attitude. It's like I'll buy a new knife and say "OK, this will be the one I will not put away and I will use like the dickens", and then I put it away and buy another one. The next one being "The one" that I will not put away but instead use it like crazy.

Anyone else fall into this rut? This is not something that I have always done, yet just recently this is plaguing me.

What to do? Yeah I know......it's easy. Just "use 'em". :)

It sounds to me like you have contracted "collectoritis". I suggest purchasing a carbide tipped scribe. Keep it handy. Whenever you open a new knife for the first time, take the carbide scribe a run a scratch down the entire length of the blade as deep as you can. The collector value is now gone, so you can put it in your pocket and use it. ;)

Ever heard the story of the guy who bought a really expensive, perfect-condition sports car?

First thing he did was put a scratch into the driver's-side door. On purpose!

He then looked at the salesman and said, "Now I can enjoy it." :)

Nope, no problems here. My Spydercos fall into three categories.

I have a couple "beaters" that will get used for things I'd cringe at using my regular "users" to cut or loaned out to folks I only half trust. So far they've survived pretty well, even the much maligned BRK Native. But, even with these, I feel no need to inflict intetional abuse.

Then I have a bunch of "users", including all my Kiwis. All get treated with at least as much respect I'd give any decent tool, some get treated the way I'd treat a quality watch, pen, or camera.

Finally, I have knives I purchased strictly as "collectibles", with no intent of using. I view them in the same light I'd view a painting or a piece of sculpture and have no problem allowing them to remain in the same condition they were in when I purchased them. Well, that's not entirely true, at least one looked so pretty and felt so darn good in my hand I could not resist moving it into the "use, but with maximum respect" category.

Hey David, I can sympathize. For years, one knife was all I really needed (Spyderco, of course), but since I have discovered the true depth of Spyderco, now I have a small collection too. I try and buy only knives I can see using on a daily basis. My problem is, I really, truly love all the knives I have and wish I could carry and use each one every day! So I try and do a weekly rotation of one big and one small along with my always on-me Tasman to give each of them a bit of a workout. I also recently bought some "pre-need replacements" (thanks for that term Yab!) of discontinued models that I REALLY love - specifically the Kris and big Persian.

I don't know what the answer is other than, buy as many as you like for whatever reason you like. Unlike cars or boats or motorcycles or pets, they don't cost anything to keep and maintain once the initial purchase is made AND they take up a relatively small amount of space. So don't feel guilty, just buy em and use em...or stick em in a box and just look at em! It's all good man!:D:D

the only problem i have using my users is lending them to people...there is always one knuckledhead that needs it to pry or unscrew something.

ROFL David,

I really didn't ever think I'd hear that from you :)

Personally I have whittled down my collection considerably. I now have most of my blades being the 1 of 3 which I enjoy to colect and use....anmely: Persians, Kopas, and Delicas. In addition I have a healthy smattering of various other Spydies of various sizes which I also use.

There are quite a number which I have not yet put to task, but I have kept only the ones that I can see myself using at one time or another.

I have (sadly) gotten rid of most of the others which I could not see myself using. I did pass them on to Spyderco fanatics though so I know they will be appreciated. However, I do have a couple of unusual ones which I have kept for curiosity value.

My EDC? Persian, Delica, Kopa & Ladybug :D

Very few knives I have are never used.
Most folders are carried and used on a regular basis.
It isn't about what they did cost.
I have a Opinel DeLuxe, polished blade, Bubinga handle that stays safe, a 10 Euro knife.
While a Sebenza, that cost me 36 times as much, gets EDC'ed and shows it.

The only Spyderco I dont use is my Civilian.

I'm the exact same way David:o:o

I've been carrying my Delica1/SE for 2 weeks straight. I use it only for cutting tasks that I'm very sure it won't damage the blade and whenever I risk bending the FRN clip(moving boxes ect.) I slip the knife in my pocket during those activities:o

I tend this to do with all of my Spydies BTW.

I have had only one real beater Spydie and that was my Tasman Salt/SE before I lost it. You should have seen that blade:eek:.

At work I only use the issued boxcutter nowadays. I think no Spydie, Sebenza or Strider will last very long with my work related cuttings:eek:

My Dear Friends,

That is exactly why I prefer to obtain lightly used blades rather than buying new. Once it has a few scratches or dings I can actually use it.

I rarely have to use my spydie for anything rougher than an MRE bag. Usually my Strider BT gets used for the nasty stuff. But yes, using my pretty spydies hard is always something that makes me cringe but they always come out fine.

Spyderco's are users imo . However a C83 i need 2 One for use and one for savekeeping in case off loss conviscation theft etc..
Still searching.. for no redicule prices..

I like to use my knives, but also like to keep them looking new, so when I find a design that I love I buy a safe queen also;).

I think my Spydies look so good because I honestly don't come across many situtations where my knife is needed. I always carry a knife, but there are sometimes several days between use. When I do need a knife for a "tough" job, I do grab my para, which I'm not afraid to break.

The problem I have is replacing the Para in my RF pocket with anything else.
Geez... I might as well stop buying knives; they're all just sitting on my chest gathering cat hair.

I am in the same boat as the OP, n combination with Axlis' situation:

....only that instead of a Para I always have my SAK on my keyring, so for tough jobs this one gets used.

It is somewhat sad that we don't take advantage of the quality of our Spidies that much; on the other hand I think the only way to change this is to have a relatively cheap, already well used and easily replaceable Spydie like a D4 PE or so in your RFP along with your latest purchase :)

Yes, it is/was similar here. However, as of lately, I try to get rid of knives I don't use. Why even have knives you are not using...

I like to use a new knife for something hard as soon as I get it so I do not hesitate after that. A few scratches make me like a knife better for some reason.

with my needs out of a knife the D4 works great as the perfect knife for me, i love all my spydies but i only use the D4

but yes it would be hard to take others and make them new to used

I carry two blades...

Heavy: This is SD/MBC whatever you want to call it. It is not PC-friendly, and I don't care. Given the fact I stay out of, and avoid trouble... This knife is carried but never used. This knife is also available if a serious emergency should warrant its use.

User: This is something along the lines of a Cricket/Ladybug/Kiwi/Navigator... Handles all the cutting chores I might have in a day, and does not scare the crap out of people when you use it.

So in reality, 99% of my knives will never cut anything, but they are still "used." Does that make sense?

I collect and I use. I use my older Delica because I bought it used. If it were bought unused, it would be that way now. If I lose my Delica I have another unused Delica that I might use. Or maybe not? I hope I don't lose my older Delica so I can keep using it instead of having to use my newer Delica. I hate the thoughts of using a new knife that I really would rather collect.

Nope, I use the hell out of it, I am on a mission to see how much it can withstand. I do not abuse it, it is cleaned and sharpened. This is a tool, and a tool it shall be used as. :spyder:
