I just got a new Native. It has a ground dip or depression in the lock bar, probably to reduce the possibility of accidental depression and unlocking of the knive. My old Native didn't have this dip.

When did they start doing this? Are they doing it on all lockback models?

Is the grind supposed to be uniform? Mine is narrower on one side than the other.

Not speaking for Spyderco, but the notch does what you said and is called a Boye Dent. Safety first. New models often have them.

Ahhhh... the non-symetrical grind lines. If there is one thing in this universe that is heavenly, it is natuarally exsisting symmetry. That is why most supermodels are super models and leading men leading men.

One of my pet peeves on the knives we all love is goofy grind lines. Since these knives are ground on machines, the sometimes uneven grinds have to come from the machine operator not clamping the blanks in the machine correctly. These anomolies seem to vary by manufacturer and by model and from knife to knife within the model line.

Basically, you have to sort through them to get a near perfect grind. You can send yours back to the factory and ask for a better one. You'll be without a knife for a while.

Inspect before you buy is the best way to get a good one. I sure love it when they get it right though. The new fixed blade Lum I got is near perfect. Wow. I do have a couple great near perfect Natives too.

The grind on my Native is also uneven - kind of a bummer.
A clue to the time-frame on the introduction of the dent: I got mine about 2 months ago. I had to call around because most of the dealers only had the older "dent-less" style.
