This is an old martial arts adage that cropped up reciently on the MBC forum and was bought home to me again today.
I was in the office most of the day, but at short notice I had to go and visit a derelict farm yard. It was whilst I was stomping around the farms debris littered yard that I began asking myself "what if so and so happened ?" (I have an active imagination). I then began to realise that although my office knife (a standard) would cope with most jobs, in these rugged areas a different knife might have been better.
After coming to this realisation I thought that some other advice given for self defence on the MBC might also be aplicable to daily carry where your not sure what environment / situation you might end up in. The advice was to carry one sheeple freindly knife and one knife of a more serious nature.
It's obvious, but sometimes the obvious gets overlooked. I'd been guilty of carrying a knife to suit the chores I thought I would be doing, rather than for the situations that fate might throw at me.
This led me to start thinking what my ideal "more serious knife" would be. Even though I love my Military dearly I have come to really like leaf shaped blades, the tip feals a lot stronger.
For it's agressive cutting ability the steel would be CPM-440v (although BG-42 is becoming a favourite).
After much thought I settled on plain edge. I had thought seriously of a Spyder edge for it's ability to get in and start cutting quickly, but with more thought I felt that in an emergency situation cloths may need to be cut away from a damaged limb and depending on the material a spyder edge may tend to snag.
Flat ground of course. Hollow ground may be better for light work, but IMHO flat ground is the better all rounder.
Does such a knife exist ?
Well from what I've seen the Lil' Temperance looks pretty darn close, can't wait to get one.
"Walk softly, but carry a big stick."
