I am amazed at how many people I run into a day that do not carry a knife. They must not actually do anything at work or go anywhere but home. I think people use my knife as much as I do, " hey can I barrow that for a second... wow that's really sharp ! got a bandaid ? "

It's the same mindset that allows others to avoid carrying a pen, watch, or lighter and be continually saying "can I borrow your pen?", "got the time?", or "got a light?". In fairness, not everyone "needs" a pocket knife often enough to make carrying one routinely seem like the sensible thing to do.

True, much less buy a decent one.
People who are indifferent to knives just dont go that far.
But when given one, many of them start using it and appreciate the convenience of having a sharp blade around.

Others will do the same thing they'd do if given a $100 ballpoint or a $300 watch - smile, say thanks, carry it for a day or two, leave it sitting on top of their bureau for a month or six, then tuck it away in a drawer.
And, again, in fairness, there are those whose work and/or leisure take them places where carrying a knife, instead of being a convenience, is a nuisance. At the least it's one more "thing" to dump in the tray when passing thru a security checkpoint. In some cases you'll be forced to choose between keeping it or being able to get where you're going on time. My boss lost SAK that way last week. At worst, it will prevent you from reaching you destination because you will be detained and interrogated.

In all fairness, no one "needs" a television set often enough to bother with, yet how many people do without one? Even if they never use it for anything more than opening their mail or their microwave tv dinner, they need a knife more often than they need that idiot box they can't live without.
I love to answer the other questions you mentioned with phrases such as "can I borrow your wife?", "it's exactly time for you to buy a watch.", and if you are religious, you don't even want to know how I answer someone who asks if I've got a light. :D

LOL :D
Dude that just made my day. I've had a rough day (sorta) and just seeing the "it's exactly time for you to buy a watch" just made me lose it. :D

As to the OP, I've given away knives to people I work with and out of the 5 I've given away only 1 of the people use their knife. It pretty much makes me wanna never give away another knife. The one guy that uses his, I have given him another and he also uses it and likes knives now. Everytime one of the guys that I gave a knife to asks if they can borrow mine I ask "where's the one I gave you" and they don't get to borrow mine.
In their defense, I've seen them open boxes with keys, one of the prongs of a plug that you would stick into a 110 outlet to power a drill. I've even seen people punch boxes to break the tape. So humans are very innovative but it does seem that the smart ones carry knives. We are the ones that will be prepared when the lights go out and the SHTF. ;)

I gave my buddy a Spyderco, he does appreciate a sharp quality knife very much and use it often, but he still won't carry it with him.
